Today's Hunt In The Woods. Two Good Finds, & One Is A First For Me!

Headed off to a body of woods where I've dug a lot of interesting things in the past, including a buggy tag and old tokens. This spot continues to elude me for old coins, though, but there is pottery shards all over these woods like they used to have massive parties there. Judging by the somewhat intact cups and such that I found around the place in the past I'm guessing it's activity was from the late 1800's up until the 40's or so.

Anyway, very first signal was a good coin signal but was large. Out pops an old pocket watch! Too bad it's plated silver and not the real thing, but that's the first pocket watch for me so I'm happy with it. Going to clean it up and see if I can find a date somewhere on it.

A bit later I get another mostly decent coin signal and this one seemed about coin sized. Out pops an old octagon shaped aluminum toke about the size of a half dollar. Cool, that's a keeper I'll take any day too.

I was digging any and all signals above iron hoping for a gold ring, some odd coin, or any kind of interesting relics. Seems like I always pop some cool stuff out of this place if I'm willing to dig any signal, so I'll be back to do some more. Going to call this place the relic woods I think. Just curious that there are no coins showing up. I'm sure it's been hunted before due to it's proximity to a ball diamond but it's a massive body of woods with pottery sprawled out everywhere so I don't see how somebody could have snagged it all.

Critter,I've searched places that don't give up a lot of coins, though your finds are interesting. Thanks Ron

Critt, sounds intresting to me , that spot is 10 times better than the woods i hunt , gold coin in thear for you ,

Gunnar, nice to see you around again. Did you get your Blisstool yet and if so please feel free to post some videos or tell us how your liking it.

must have been a gathering place or could have been a homestead nearby....if there is a source of water nearby i would search that area as that is where i usually find flat buttons and coins as they may have washed clothing, swam, watered the horses....remember water=life, people and animals could not survive without it.. that spot reminds me of a field ive been hunting lately, very few coins-3 indian heads but every time i go there i always find a horse bell or two along with the fragments of old harmonicas and pewter spoons and oh ya,lots of oyster shells...

Based on my research I believe this spot was home to a winter festival they had in the late 1800's to the 1940's or so. Neat thing is I've found several horse slay bells at this spot and while researching it in a book I saw pictures of horses pulling slays that had the same kinds of bells on them! That was cool. There are two mowed grass fields next to these woods where I've found many old coins over the years. I'm sure there are many left because it's deep soil and I've dug some of my deepest silvers there. The woods, though, I think had people picnicing at these events under the shade of the trees, because there are pottery shards all over the place for an area about the size of two football fields. Never seen anything like it. It's not a dump spot, either, because there is very little in the way of metal trash laying around in those woods. Just shocked that all my coins have come from the two mowed grass fields and not from the woods, yet I'm finding stuff in the woods to make me believe people dropped plenty of stuff by accident there. A heart shaped old non-silver pendant, a buggy tag with company name on it made of brass, tokens, and so on. I really think somebody pounded the heck out of those woods digging any coin signals but left the iffy ones behind.

Once, in one of the mowed grass fields, I found a sterling silver top to a salt or pepper shaker. And it was huge! About as big around a about half the diameter of a baseball. It was a good hunk of silver, for sure. Wish I would have held onto it until silver prices got as high as they are these days. A friend also found a sterling spoon with a cool looking lion on the handle that was dated 1800's. I've found indians, barbers, V's, mercs, rosies, washingtons, and so on at these mowed grass fields, but not a single coin other than clad in the woods.
