Todays hunt at Grubstakes Patch

Grubstake

Member
Well My uncle, Shep Lewis and I all went up the hill today to the patch, I got Skunked, Lewis got skunked, My uncle got a 1.7 DWT and Shep found two nice ones also, I did not get a chance to weigh his, heres pictures, I was using my Platy. and Shep his wallaby, whichquite on him toward the end of the day, just started going haywire. We know it was the coil, because we put my platy. on his detector, and itworked fine. Heres the pictures, Shep holding his big nugget just after finding it, and Lewis and Shep on the back of his truck, and then Sheps nuggets in his hand, with a quarter for size. Grubstake

Sorry you got the old skunk today. I know that does not happen much to you. I had work on my wife's car today but thats OK, from the looks of those knees, it looks plenty muddy out there and I am so tired of mud, can't wait for summer.

yeh, it was muddy Mike, but we had funanyway, it tickles me to see others get gold, I have got my share, and I know there is more withmy name on it. I see John Banned me from his forum, not that I care, I call them like I see them. Take care my friend. Grubstake

Gary, weighed them up- 6.7 grams and 1.7 grams. Will post coil problem separate-

That explains why the Wallaby started acting up. The Wallaby has a gold limiter chip inside it.

Shep obviously exceeded his limit after finding two nice nuggets, and the Wallaby shut down.

You know after thinking about this for a minute, you said the smaller coil worked fine. But the smaller coil doesn't draw as much power. I wonder if the battery was getting low?

Sort of a long shot, but with the old lead acid batteries my detector would start acting up towards the end of the day, and if I put a fresh battery on it, it would clear right up.

If you were using a regulated system that would sort of preclude the low battery theory. What kind of battery were you using?

Thanks!

DOC

I knew that big one would go a 1/4 oz. Nice going Shep. Did you tell DOC that when your coil was acting up, we put my platypus on and it ran smooth as a baby's but? Grubstake

Doc, I run the Pocket Rocket. Had the 7800 batt in it fully charged, only used 4 hours on it. Switched to other batt. same thing. As I posted earlier, believe you're right on losing it's vacuum. Was it really vacuumed or just compressed? I did as you said, cleaned out flex fitting, compressed coil w/ my old weight belt and resealed. Will let you know.
Is Coiltec considering making a waterproof coil like the Platapus, the size of the wallaby? I like the idea of the coil being sealed

Well you just never know what COILTEK is up to? But Kermit the frog would be proud!

I can't say any more than that!

Obviously it was not a battery problem. You just have a FCP. Funky Coil Problem.

Congrats on your nuggets, by the way.

DOC

I'll trust my little patypus any day DOC, when his{Shep} went haywire, it was getting close to coming home time anyway, so we pluged the Platy. in to his control box, so we know for sure that was not it, ran like a sewing machine, just so nice a smoooooth! Grubstake

...you may have got some water into the coil which has got into contact with the actual winding.
That will give you the exact symptoms you have mentioned.
It is a real pain in the arse, but if you can dry the inside of the coil then it should be OK.

Remember if you have to open the coil body right up you can reglue the thing back together by disolving an old coil cover in acetone to a nice stcky, runny consistancy and use that as a glue/bog. It works really well and is good for fixing worn out coil covers and cracked coils. Its an old trick, so you may well know it allready.
Good luck.

What have you ever said to get banned from a forum!
You would have to be one of the least controversial people I have ever encountered.
I also get into strife by calling it as I see it, so I sympathise mate.

Yeh Bris Dave, that was Shep having the coil problem, I got banned, but not from this one, a forum called Nuggetdigger.com no big loss. Itwas a personal deal. You have a great day Dave, I know its hot there now, got to the beach, and find some jewlery, if its not good for or too hot for anything else. Later Grubstake

Nah. Its not too hot here at the moment. We are coming onto winter and i am waiting to get back to my mine for the dry season.
I think I will take your advice and go to the beach today though as I have bugger all to do for the next 2 days, but then it will be flat out for the next 8 months.
I think I might get a digital camera and post some photos this year. Believe it or not, but I have never used a digital in my life, so if I can get photos as clear as yours I will be delighted.
Cheers, Dave

Well Dave, mine I got last year for my birthday, from my wife, its a SAMSUN, I picked it out at Walmart, it was a $119.00, and had a built in memory, but had a place for a memory card also, so my wife got me a 64MB memory card also. Its a 3.2 mega pixel, with a 3x zoom. I like it, it came with all the soft whare and I can size the pictures right on the camara, it has 5 choise's I run the 640x480 and can post that size, right from the camara, without doing anything, just puting them in a jpeg file, which it does almost atomaticly for me. I hope you have success with yours, I sure like mine. Have fun at the beach. Grubstake

Years ago I built an underwater gold detector for a friend. He cut the coil cable on something and the salt water seeped up the cable in to the detector and the coil. I repaired everything and asked about the glue to seal the coil. At the time "Fisher Research Labs" said to use MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) and an old cover to make the glue to put a coil back together. Looked like a factory glue job. Acetone is probably as good! They are both plastic solvents.

Yep. I would say you are right.
Basically the solvent acts to chemically weld the 2 surfaces and seems to be a good solution to these problems.

I use it mostly to repair coil covers as they get expensive at $15+ each for larger coils and will wear out in only a couple of weeks of regular use.

Nice gold!

I just picked up my Platypus coil from Doc, Grubstake, I'll get to try it out in a bit, and I'll let you know how I like it. Thanks for all your input and advice.

All the best,

Lanny

Good deal Lanny, your going to love that coil, I'm glad you got one. You will see, that it has not been hyped by me, I use mine everytime out at the patch, it has been very good to me. I hope Coiltek comes out with more coils based on it. Take care Grubstake
