Today's Hunt (After Dropping Dog Off At Vet)

Yea, I wasn't really in the mood to hunt but I wanted to do something other than sitting home and dwelling on the dog, so I met up with 4 friends in the woods where two of them found a few silvers Friday. What better way to get my mind off things then to shoot the breeze with some fellow hunters. One guy got a silver washington, a 1800's hat pin, and a few wheats. The other guy got a merc and a few wheats. I got some wheats and a buffalo. The buffalo read low, at 141 and 142. Yes, beaver tails can read around 141 to 142 versus nickles usually reading around 144 to 146, but this signal was more stable than a beaver tail so I dug it. Beaver tails often will at least jump between two numbers more, and usually by 3 numbers or more. But my criteria is 2 numbers or less and I'll dig it, in particular if it doesn't have the somewhat sick warbly sound a beaver tail can have.

Anyway, I only hunted an hour while those guys had been hunting a good hour before I got there and already had those finds. After an hour, despite how good this spot looked and old wheats and stuff popping up all over the place for everybody, I decided my heart just wasn't in it so I left for home to find out about the dog. I had called from the woods on a cell phone but nobody answered, so I wanted to go home and see if there was any news.

Oh, I also dug a neckless charm that might be old as it looks like it, but it's made of some junk metal. It read 173.

Critter, sorry about your dog, lost Devon my Britney about year and a half ago, problem with dogs they don't live long enough.Good you got out for a short hunt.I have noticed that Buffalo's can read a little low in different ground conditions.I use band 2 on the Elite which if switched to band one will give a higher ID for nickles the same result on the GTs I've had. Good Luck HH Ron

Critterhunter,

If you love dogs no explanation is needed. And you're right, they just don't live long enough.

My goal is life is to be half the person my dog thinks I am.

Sounds like you were a great owner. No dog could ask for more.

Thanks again for the kind words. My only regret is not getting her on video talking up a storm, because as I said I'm going to miss that the most.

Yes, I too believe that different soils can make nickles read lower, as well as them being degraded or changed in the make up of their metal as they leech into the soil and the soil leeches into and changes them as well. I think the lowest I've seen nickles read on the ID charts is around 136 from memory. The key for me isn't so much about where it reads, but rather if it's got a nice "round" sound to it and doesn't change by more than two digits no matter which way I sweep over it. I'm sure some super deep or on edge ones can change by 3 digits or more, but at the very least by not digging those I'm avoiding a lot of trash that will change by 3 digits or more depending on which way you sweep over it.
