Met up with Park Pirate this morning for some detecting at a different city park than usual. Hit a hilly area where BRATNY found a nice shield nickel in the past. We got skunked in that area so we moved on to another spot. I get a shallow nickel signal I figured was a new Jefferson but from a depth of only about 3-4 inches, I dig a beautiful 1867 Shield nickel. One of the nicest ones I've ever dug. I showed the nickel to Tony and he came over but we weren't able to find any other coins on the hill. Moved on to another spot but didn't get squat. Decided to hit the hill where I dug the shield nickel again. Got another shallow nickel signal and again from only a couple of inches down I pull out an 1891 V nickel. Now the fun started....In quick succession from a small area I dug another V nickel (1900), three Indian head cents (semi key 1873 closed 3, 1886 Variety 1 & 1883) all in super condition. The ground here was super nice to the coins. That nice loamy soil that doesn't hold any water. None of these coins was more than 3-4 inches deep which is why they were probably still there. Got to thinking all I needed to complete a nickel grand slam was a Buffalo nickel. Within 5 minutes I get another shallow nickel signal and sure enough, I pulled out a 1927 Buff to complete the slam. No silver but one of my best days in a long time. Also pictured is a 1910 V nickel and 1909 VDB cent I dug yesterday.
