Today I decided to hunt an area that I had just recently found a 1909 Wheatie. I had the feeling that there was more to be found at the site. Upon arrival I saw much to my dismay another guy swinging his detector. I introduced myself and told him that I too metal detected. He told me that he was just passing thru the area on his way back to Oregon and that he had seen the site and decided to hunt it. He told me that he had not been very successful and that he was leaving. He said I was welcome to hunt the site. I had permission and seeing that he was just passing thru, I had the feeling that he did not have permission, but I thanked him anyway and fired up the MXT.
I had been hunting for a short time and was sweeping a loose pile of dirt that had been pushed there by a bulldozer. I received a strong iron signal mixed with a quarter signal. I thought it might be an aluminum can but decided to dig it none the less. A moment later I had a rusted nail in my pouch. I then ran my coil over the soil once more and got a signal indicating quarter and 50 cents. I removed a couple scoops of dirt and saw a white bottle with a large silver coin laying next to it. I removed the coin and saw that it was a 1922 Peace dollar in great condition. In over 20 years of detecting this is my first silver dollar find and to say I was excited would be a understatement. I cringe when I think that had I not checked the soil one more time before moving on, I still would not have the silver dollar. HH Dennis in Idaho
