To "upgrade" or not?

I have an MXT PRO with the 950 and the 4x6 coil. I have used this in Indiana and now in Idaho. I have made a few decent finds on coins as deep as 8" but most have been in the 4-5" range. I like to get the most out of each hunt because about half the time I only get one chance at a property. I mainly hunt in town on private residences. Sometimes I have to use both coils due to trash in the yards. I have considered getting the 6x10 but after borrowing one I could not justify the cost. It just didn't separate targets that much more than the 950. Perhaps I needed more time behind it. I like to coin hunt but love to find jewelry and rings of which iv'e only found one so far (rings). I'm considering adding coils or even upgrading machines if I need to. Don't get me wrong I really like the MXT PRO but I miss my XL PRO that I cut my teeth on. I will always have an MXT and as a matter of fact I just bought another one as a back up, but I'm wondering if I would like/benefit from say a V3I... I know there would be a steep learning curve but the minute details of how and why things work and how to make it better is where I'm at my best. Maybe I'm missing the boat all together and should by Minelab!?? That statement alone ought to set in motion a multi page thread!
Thanks for your opinions, advise, 2 cents and most of all your real life experiences.

Welcome to Idaho Dan! I am in just about the same situation as you: I hunt private residences with my MXT and usually only get one chance. My coils of choice are the Spider 9", the White's 6x10, and the White's 5.3 Eclipse (actually more of a 6 1/2" concentric). Here's my reasoning: The first coil I use is the 6x10. If I only have time for one coil, tyhat's the one I use. It separates well and gets "ok" depth, but most importantly, it covers a lot of ground. Giving up depth also means giving up digging those really deep holes that homeowners cringe when they see. With the 6x10, you can be sure you'll get just about everything down to about 6", and covering 10" swaths with each swing.

I also have a V3i, but that is my "nerd" detector I like to fiddle with and learn about different settings, but it is not my go to for private residences. When time is of the essence, the MXT will get you the goods with very little fiddling. I also have an XL Pro that will be buried with me when I finally go. :) It's White's best analog detector and is filled with nostalgia and good memories for me having been raised on White's analog machines from yesteryear. But the MXT is still what I reach for when I hunt a private residence, because it is just as deep and has better separation than the XL Pro.

So my two cents is go for the White's 6x10 and stick with your MXT.

Great post Wayfarer.

I say stick with your MXT. Enough said.

Thank you very much for the responses. Now I just need to find a 6X10 at a reasonable price.

I hope you can find one. I'm sure you've checked the classified ads on here, but have you asked about one that's not in use?

If you posted that "you are looking for" that coil on the Classifieds here on Findmall.

Of coarse! There's my blond moment fir the year! Man, I'm glad that's over...!
Thank you Nancy.

You're only one up on me. I'll catch up soon......You do know that redheads are only 20% smarter than blondes, don't you?

Dan'O,

There was no mention about the 10" DD in comparison to the 6 x 10 DD. Wanted to know your thoughts and anyone else's about that coil?

Thanks,

I've never tried the 10" DD but after using the 6X10DD twice I can say that it would be hard to top it! I struggle sometimes with the 4X6 and really like the 950 but the separation I see with the 6X10 has really helped me pull more targets out of trashy areas. I can't wait till the 5.3 Eclipse gets here, it was my favorite coil when I had the XL PRO. I did a couple hours tonight and found 4 quarters, 4 nickles, 4 dimes and many pennies - half of them clad. One quarter was mixed with 2 nickles about 2" down and it registered between 72 and 75 on the VDI. Many of the pennies were next to pull tabs or iron of one sort or another and with a little patience I learned to pull the 'good' signal out of the trash. Again, I really like the 4X6DD!

Sounds like you're on a roll with the coil. Congratulations!!!!

I imagine you are talking about the 6x10 Eclipse, right?
