To Threshhold - or not to threshhold?

My old machine worked in silent search - no background hum. With the Explorer its possible to turn the threshhold hum down to a point where the machine's silent - but you still hear all the target signals. Is there any down-side to searching with no threshhold hum? The only thing I can think is that you will miss the nulling over iron..but then if your setting is a completely open screen in Iron Mask - in theory there will be no nulling? Your comments appreciated - thanks in advance

The only thing you might miss is the information to slow down in trouble areas and that your machine may need noise cancel to cope with outside interferance. I prefer it because of this extra information though I keep as low as I can and still hear it. If you don't slow down when you hit these areas you can pass right over good targets. I for one never hunt with a completely open screen and I don't think very many people do.

Hate to disagree with the Cladmaster because he really kicks arse (amazing totals), but I gotta...
If you are determined to pick good targets off of iron trash AND you are running some level of discrimination, then you need a threshold sound to know when to look closer. When it goes null, it is time to slow down and sniff around that hunk of iron.
Also, if you don't hunt with a threshold, you will won't know when your last screen update happened unless you want to monitor the display. The Explorer locks onto a target ID until she gets a new threshold for comparison, I guess. (This, incidently, is the worst trait this wonderful machine has, at least in my opinion.)
I also have to say that you can get into a situation where it will never ID the target and is so tight in iron that you can't pinpoint it very well, either. At least we have that problem Most other machines would just miss it all together.

I always use threshold just very low so I can hear those whispers. I have a Tesoro Golden that has silent discrim mode and I think that is one of it's weak points. I'm always wondering if it's working. I would never turn threshold all the way off. Like I said you miss too much info.

Tim & Cladmaster thanks - however..when I turn down the threshhold hum, am I not simply lowering the VOLUME of the hum...ie: I'm not switching threshhold off...just turning down the VOLUME of the threshhold sound to a point where it's no longer audible thru the headphones? Threshhold is still fully functioning - I just cant hear it any longer? Many thanks in advance Guys
