To safely remove hardened Green Grunge on old Copper coins . . .

I put them in olive oil and put the oil in a pan on the stove and heat to very hot, then turn down heat and just leave them in there for an hour or so.
Wipe off the green crud with a slightly damp cloth. Probably not all will come off the first time so put coins back into oil, heat up again and leave in for a few hours. The oil should be hot but not smoking.
This is really working great on my old coppers!
No damage to the coin at all!
Enjoy!

Tony, nice post. You can stick a copper coin in a potato and leave it for thee or four days and it will clean them. This was how we did it back in the sixties.

Tony, what type of dipping sauce goes best with the left over deep fried green crud? emmmm!
Do you know how many calories are... say per 12 crusty fried copper cruds? Looks like I have snacks for the winter but don't really want to over do it. <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">

I have some IH's that have a nice, smooth green verdigri coating on the obverse that I do NOT want to remove, but they also have a lump of that hardened green grit on the reverse that I DO want to remove.
Will the heated oil remove everything from the coin?
I really just want to remove that crusty hardened stuff and leave the smooth green patina.

Hi Mike,
The hot oil treatment will remove the green patina from most coins. The coins will turn black or dark brown after being boiled for a few minutes. Wiping them clean with a fresh coat of olive oil after boiling removes most of the dark crud but this may leave the surface of the coin pitted or with an undesirable texture. I generally only use this technique on ones that are so bad that there is nothing to loose.
Good Hunting!

I've got some with the same green crud probably from the same place--holler if you want them

down to a given area and right next to the coin it is really tough to get off.
Still testing this in conjunction with electrolysis.
