Is a pattern better or worse than and iron mask setting. I have always considered an iron maks as just another way to make a pattern. I can make an iron mask on the Smartfind screen or use the IM settings. Anyhow, I don't think we can answer the question of which is best. We might think of is discrimination better than all metal or very little discriminatin such as IM-15. Well I don't think we can answer that one unless we define it better. So the bottom line to me is I use all the technology I can that the Explorer offers. The posts on patterns by myself are not to promote patterns but rather to respond to request for more on patterns. Some of the examples are only close to the ones I use and some are just to suggest what can be done.
I hunt a location where one can hunt for a good 30 minutes and not get a hit on iron. It was a CW location on private property and some great relics and coins have come from the site. I use IM-16 in those areas of the site. If you get around the location of an old home site, the Indian trading post, or slaves quarters, there is anywhere from 7 or 8 hits on iron per sweep to only one or two. Even with the iron considered there are other variables to consider. I think we would all take all the variables into consideration and then go with all metal, an iron mask we like or a pattern.
I keep 12 patterns, 6 in each Explorer, and others I have on my compter disk to remind me of what I did a couple years ago that I liked. The same is true of the setting that go with the patterns in that each of us will do better if we know our detector and what works best for us. That is why I try to stay away from pushing a method or settings. When I see a suggesting to alwasy use IM-16 with the setting maxed out I think WOW! I sure have some sites where I would like to see how the user does that. There are so many variables that it seems to me that each of us has to come to the settings, patterns, and or iron mask and combination that work best for us.
OK, I take my wife to breakfast early Saturday so have a great one and find a gold coin.
