TO MUCH TRASH

WENT TO AN OLD BOAT RAMP TODAY SO MUCH TRASH THE MXT WAS GOING NUTS. DID FIND 10 PENNIES NO SILVER. TRYING TO GET MORE FAMILIAR WITH THE UNIT. WOULD LIKE TO KNOW SHOULD I DIG EVERYTHING JUST TO MAKE SURE, BECAUSE I AM GETTING A LOT OF HIGH NUMBERS FROM TRASH. OR JUST DIG ONLY VDI NUMBERS ABOVE 90. THE BOAT RAMP IS ABOUT 70 YEARS OLD.

[size=large]ya do have a discimination knob. do some adjusting and see what you get. start with the factory settings. and as mpt said ya may need to get a smaller coil. ya don't say where you are or the kind of soil. what size coil are you using. old sites like that may have more trash than you can get around in.

Definitely a small coil in trashy areas. But even then, all detectors sometimes lie when there's aluminum or other trash in the ground. I suppose eventually, one becomes familiar enough w/the machine to zero in on the trash signals, but until then, your best bet is to dig all the positive VDI's until you learn the unit. Even the iffy ones can produce. I would recommend Jeff Foster's book for some of the finer details in the MXT.

I AM USING THE 6X8 DD SFE COIL I GUESS I JUST NEED TO LEARN THE UNIT BETTER. ITS THAT THERE IS SO MUCH TRASH I CAN HARDLY MOVE 8 TO 10 INCHES AND NOT HIT SOMETHING. ITS LIKE IT EVERY WHERE I HAVE GONE. I DONT THINK THAT ANYBODY IS DETECTING OR HAS EVER DONE IT IN MY AREA MUCH. I AM NEW TO THIS. I USE TO ARROWHEAD HUNT IN FIELDS AND EVERY NOW AND THEN FIND A COIN. MAYBE I WILL TRY SOME OLD HOME SITES IN THESE FIELDS AND TRY TO GET AWAY FROM SO MUCH TRASH.

Why not run the disc all the way up and see if you can cherry pick some silver out of the area? If that doesn't work, maybe rake some of the trash out and detect that spot and then you can always go back through and dig it all if you want.

All good suggestions. Areas with heavy trash are a real challenge. Takes lots of patience and persistence even with smaller coils and discrimination to work them over well.

como hunter: I hunted an old Drive in theatre several years ago with an M-6 started with 6 by 10 DD coil, very trashy, having about the same experience you describe. Changed to the 4 by 6 coil also a DD, incredible difference, in less than an hour I had a pouch full of Quarters, dimes, nickles, and pennies, most at 2 inches or less. Another hour, another full pouch. I was nearly whipped by this time. On the way out I stopped in the play ground area under the screen, got a hit that read dime 5 inches, dug the signal, up came a 1916 mercury dime in very good condition face up, I sat for several minutes afraid to turn it over, wondering if I would have a heart attack if it had a D mint mark, it didn't. Found out later that the drive in had been built on an old farm site. I hunted less than one twentieth of the theatre, hoping to get back by next spring. Slowing my swing speed, reducing sensitivity, and putting on the small coil worked.

The last sentence in Steve's post "Slowing my swing speed, reducing sensitivity, and putting on the small coil worked." is right on. As a sites trash level goes up your Gain, sweep speed and coil size needs to go down. In medium trash the 5.3 coil might be the best choice then the 6x10 as it gets a little thicker. However, the 4x6 Shooter is by far the best surgical tool in dense trash.

Good luck.
