to many rusty bottle caps!!!!

quicksilver

New member
Does anyone have some good advice on how to quit digging so many rusty bottle caps with my A T pro. They come up as 80-82 and trick me into thinking its a dime. Any thoughts?

They are pretty loud on my At/Pro. It always sounds like snark instead of a grunt like some members report. I dig them anyway because sometime they are hiding other targets. One scoop had 7 targets including bottle caps, pop tops, pull tabs, dime and a silver ring. Plus, I'm getting them out of the water so I don't have to work around them again. I used to put all my trash in the trash cans where I detect on the river, but I got the feeling somebody was busting my chops and throwing this stuff back in the water. Now, I take it home and put it in the dumpster.

Does anyone know about gold rings put in cracker jacks boxes many years ago? (Boys/girls). Found both types at an old school, an older gentleman looked at them and says they were cracker jacks prizes. Will post a pic next week when I get back home.

All widescan coils, to some extent, shift the phase away from the true value of round, rusty iron objects, including the old steel bottle caps, and it's not unusual for them to ID in the coin range.

Once the bottle caps get rusty, there is no way that I know to avoid them. The rust makes them ring up higher than the base metal (I think) so they sound like coins. I dig them every time I go out it seems. That's a lot of bottle caps over 20 years. No wonder my knees ache!

This works on some detectors, as you are swinging over the target keep moving backwards and when the tip get to the cap it will crackle or at least change sounds, try this and see if it works on the AT Pro

I don't get the low-high-low most of the time like the At/Pro manual and the videos do. Once in a while, but mostly it's loud, i e; snark...

People get jealous if they think you're finding a lot of stuff. When they see me taking stuff out of my scoop or sifter, they assume it's all jewelry or coins and don't realize most of it's trash. Some people are of the opinion I shouldn't be there at all, but I do try to stay out of their way. I give them all the room I can, if they give me time. Last Saturday, a busload of people hit the water at one time after a brief rain and it sure got crowded before I left for deeper waters.

*Bottle cap? Stomp hard on the target. often times, an old bottles cap's halo will break, and the reading will change from a good coin sounding target to a bottle cap or junk.
Don't forget to use the iron audio feature if searching for coins or silver.

All you gotta do is turn the Iron Audio on if you get a suspect target. Also watch the VDI display, it''ll give you an 80-81, and a low number on both sides. If you get a one way low grunt and low number, dig it up, could be an iron object masking a good one.

Maybe get a concentric search coil?

I've been really lucky when it comes to identifying bottlecaps with the AT Pro and double "D" search coils. Simply turn on "Iron Audio" whenever I get a coin signal and if I get the grunt around the edges of the target I move on!
However, on the beach I still dig 'em. I dig pretty much every thing on the beach 'cause the digging is so easy, just scoopin' up the sand with the long handled scoop.

I suggest you try a concentric search coil if you're having problems with bottle caps. Concentric search coils identify bottle caps way better than double "D" (which actually don't).

Anyways, best of luck to ya!

Happy Hunting!:)

I own 6 metal detectors including a PI unit from Whites and all of them see rusty caps and rusty nails as a valuable target!! Sometimes I can disc them out by checking the target from two different directions if it is a good target the signal will remain the same if it is a rusty nail or bottle it will usually change when scanning at a different angle, give it a try you might have some luck my GTI 2500 sually discovers the correct target and discs out most junk also I can switch to the same DD coil you are using and it does work pretty well.:garrett::starwars:

That's a lot of great advice. I appreciate the tips from all of you. Many thanks and happy hunting.
