To hunt or not to hunt?

Well its been months since i have been on and even longer since i have hunted.
Congrats to all you sea loving pirates who get to rake in the gold year round! Especially dig who form all the finds post looks as though he may be retiring soon... Congrats on the awesome finds
Now to the tough decision....
I have been doing my research for this years season and i stumbled on a private lake that i now have permission to hunt. I am stoked.... i just called them up and asked and they said yes.
From what i understand no one has ever hunted the swim areas at the lake or ever asked to. You would have to know about the lake because its not on any map. I really really want to go hunt it :drool:but i am having a hard time deciding if i should wait or just suck it up and put 2 wet suits on, get out there and see what i find. I have a new born and don't have the money right now for waders, a dry suite or a good heavy mill wet suite. I do have a 3 mill full body wet suite and a 1 to mill shorty.

The water surface temp is in the upper 50's to low 60's. Any thoughts? Should i wear the shorty and 3 mill full body and just see how long i can take it? Or wait.. and wait and wait until the water in the 70's? Any suggestions? Any trial and error wisdom?

This is goind to sound wierd--but it should help. Use your 1mil shorty along with your 3 mill suit. But before putting anything on put on some womens panty hose first
then the rest. Use to dive in 40 deg water with 6 mill suit along with the pantyhose underneath. I could make 2 dives comfortably. The biggest problem you would
have is keeping your hands warm. My dive depths at the time were between 40 to 65 feet. Bottom time was between 45 - 55 minutes. Good luck.
Best you could do is wait until warmer water sets in.
Nobody has hunted the site and you have the only permission to hunt. You need to be safe. I would wait.

If your going into an unknown body of water, take someone with you, even if it's just someone to keep an eye on you from the edge.. Especially if your not 100% sure about your wetsuit situation. It's real easy to get into trouble in a body of water you are unfamiliar with... Even more so when your cold and not thinking straight. I honestly would wait until the weather improved, but if you got your hands on enough suit to make sure you'd be safe then go try it out. Plan ahead for problems, have a way to warm up in your car. All that being said though, what a great opportunity! I hope it turns out awesome for you.

PS
Thanks for the congrats!

Your posts leads me to believe you are young, therefore, you should go for it! However, hypothermia sneaks up and kills folks, get to know its symptoms, and get outta there before your legs stop working...maybe work the shallows until your body sort of adjusts. Its tough! You gotta wade in and out a few times to get used to it..for some reason, ducking down in the really cold up to your neck kicks your metabolism into overdrive, and your engine room is really pouring the coals to the furnace to keep you from freezing to death, you will get out of the water very hungry!
Up until this year, I'd go into the water every Jan 1st...just because...but I always got a big fire going on the bank of the river first, and you actually feel hot..but not if you stay in too long.
At least you'd have an experience to add to your life...and maybe someday you will have to go in after a drowning person in the real cold, and you will know about how much time you have before you lock up..Good Luck!

Wear the two suits. Take a bottle of warm, not hot, water to pre-warm and wet your suit. This will lessen the effects of the cold water when you first go in. Of course you could always just pee in your suit and do the same thing. Haah!

Thanks to all for the Input and advice.
I have put a little thought into it and i am going to put some of those hand warmers that are activated by breaking them up in to zip lock bags and put one on each thigh and 2 on my chest.
I think this should give me at least a added hour or 2 in the water before i have to get out. The warm water in the wet suite idea i like not to keen on the Pantyhose hose.
It would be my luck some one would video me taking my full body suit of and catch me with a shorty and pantyhose hose on. I dont want to be on you tube like that.

Thanks again to all for your input i plan on giving it a go next Thursday.

Well start slow and see what you get... The lake may provide the $ you need to further explore it.

be safe what ever your decision..... rememember you have a newborn..... if the swimming area has a beach i would start there... and while your working the beach and looking at the water you may come up with a better idea how to approach the water part....some times these prospects dont materialize into what our minds fantisize , and some times they do.... take your time,, have fun and most of all BE SAFE.....
