Well I have been putting in my hours learning my se pro using bryces settings except running manual instead of automatic. Lots of wheats and clad and one lone merc.
I have only been digging targets that repeat back and forth and at 90 degrees back and forth. Yesterday I got a very nice back and forth repeater. Smart find had it pegged in the top right which tells me most likely a coin. It did not walk or bounce just steady hovering in top right. Turned 90 degrees and not a peep just nulling. I went on to the next and then had to cut my trip short to go to work. I have been thinking about that signal since then. Would you have dug it? I remember where it was at and may go back. The area is full of iron trash and the signal was about 8 inches on the depth gauge.

I will be interested in the opinions of others. It's hard to answer without actually being there and hearing the signal, but I would say that I probably wouldn't dig it. It sounds like a rusty nail to me. When I turn 90 degrees, I have to hear some type of signal before I dig. If you go back, let us know what it was.

If the cursor was pegged in the top right corner in that one swinging direction, I would have dug it. But that's just me ... I dug a '43 walking half dollar last year that was a questionable signal. And I only dug it because I had just found a '43 quarter a few inches away from it. I never walk away now leaving myself wondering. If it ends up being a nail .. so be it.

Scroll ahead to the 5:00 mark if you want to skip the rest.

As DougF said, 95% of the time that type of signal will be a rusty nail. But, as McDave said -- it's also good to dig those sometimes, as the 5% that are NOT nails make it worth it (especially from 8" deep, which you said this signal was...)

No way to know unless you dig.

With the gazillion hunters these days...the ONLY reason that signal was even still there for you to hear is because everyone else before you who heard it...walked over it too because they thought it was iron.

If you are waiting for that textbook sounding signal that repeats from one direction...and when you turn 90 degrees it still repeats for you..you might be in for a very long wait.

Most of those signals disappeared years ago.

Some of my best silver finds the last couple of years have come from the exact same type of signal you are talking about...and of course quite a few rusty nails have popped out as well.

IF you have time...give some of those not so perfect signals a shot.

If you're pressed for time...then by all means walk on.

One thing is for sure...you will never know unless you dig.

One other thing is for sure as well...your rusty nail count will go up too.:bouncy:

All it takes is one nice find to pay for the extra work though.

One quick personal tip: I run semi auto sensitivity some times because it helps to keep iron falsing to down to a point that it won't sound so much like a coin if indeed it is iron.

Good luck.

If you've got a big thick black strip on the left of the screen which means you are discriminating coins then the null could mean the cursor went left some but not all the way to the left corner.
If you only had a very thin strip of discrimination then a null means it's most likely iron.

If you're running Bryce's settings then your iron mask was set at -22...and I too have dug quite a few coins that hit just as you are describing.

Yes it has a chance of being iron but if you have the time then why leave it for someone else to dig?

I'd say dig a few of those types of signals to help learn them in your soil.

I have clearance from the Mrs. Going back to the park tomorrow after work. When I find it I will video it and try my first live dig!

Well I went out and dodged the raindrops. No signal. I could not refind it! Grrrr should have dug. Going to chalk that up as learning.

Hey IndianaMan, its Indiana Digger here I am also in Northern Indiana. You would be the first person I have got a hold of in this area. I'm on the South side of South Bend. Where you located at?
