I found this latched onto my backside this morning. Yes, it's a deer tick .... be careful out there !!!

Yep, be careful out there with those things.----The wife & I got several of them on us a couple of years ago in the early spring while hunting an old camp up in the mts.----There was still snow on the ground and we had been walking thru the bushes.----Didn't think they would be out that early at that high of elevation & with snow still on the ground but they were.----------Del

This is why I start doing more beach detecting this time of year. It is the end of the season for woods and fields for me. Time to put away the V3i and break out the Excalibur!

What are the odds of ticks carry the Lymes disease ???????????

I know a lot of people who have been bitten by ticks and ran to their doctors, who prescribed antibiotics without running tests for the disease. It seems that physicians are quick to treat it rather than testing for it. I know this is a controversal area, so I did a little research:

THE TRUTH ABOUT TICK BITES AND LYME DISEASE

Elton----I don't know what the odds/percentages are but those things are nasty parasites.---------Del------------Sorry, I didn't see Neils post before I posted this.---Good info Neil!

50% in "deer ticks" el! they are very tiny, and get into cracks and crevices
every where on the body!..they engorge themselves with your blood, and pass
the virus that way!..just sayin'

(h.h.!)

The deer tick I found had been on me for less than 18 hours. I was able to peel it off without leaving any parts behind. And it was not burrowed or engorged in any way. The bite area is red and a bit sore, but I am thinking that I got to it before it could do any damage. I am still considering getting tested ... will see if the bite area gets worse by tomorrow.

The bite will be worse by tomorrow. I know from experience! It will itch a lot too. You may even see the bullseye rash, but unless you get some of the other symptoms I would not worry about it. I get bitten at least 4 or 5 times a season. I would rather deal with a tick bite than chiggers!!!

Will leave a nasty looking red sore. I have had quite a few. I did have one that broke off in my thigh when I tried to remove it. Had to go to the Walk in ERclinic to have the doc dig it out. Took him 20 mimutes to dig it out with a needle. Now THAT left a sore.
However the normal tick bites leave a dark red circle usually less than inch in diameter and it does not spread like the Lyme ones.
Also might be sore but they almost always are a bit....and they can take weeks to go away completely. I would guess the little bugger have something in their mouth that helps keep your blood flowing that they spit so to speak in the wound. Alot of bloddsuckers do...like leeches...although not sure about ticks.

Prophylaxis.....In laymans term....if your in a potential tick area...start antibiotic therapy days before entering tick areas....look it up.
