tips on airline travel with detectors

Hi Guys,
I have a Whites GMT and am hoping to get it down to FL with me from MI. I'm new to the hobby and have never tried to travel with one before. I'm going to be on the gulf side and such have dreams of spanish treasure. I'm getting my son a tesoro to assist with coins, and I know that breaks down pretty well. IF I can't fit it, It's so light to ship, that would be another option. I still have not recieved my GMT in the mail yet (delayed from weather), so don't know if it'll break down easy. Does anyone know if a detector can be taken on plane as a carry on? I think I recall this when I was a kid, but we live in a different world since 9/11. Let me know if you have any general tips, or specific to the GMT.

Thanks guys, and Merry Christmas,
Greg

Greg, I carry mine on all the time and never have had a problem.. I personally perfer to carry mine on rather then leaving it with the baggage handlers. HH jim tn

Several years ago I picked up a hard case from Whites, and removed all the foam and relined it with new 2" foam on both sides and top and bottom. I have carried up to 2 complete detectors inside along with the standard loops, chargers and battery's. The main thing to remember is every Airlines may have a different size requirement for overhead bin compartment carryon's. Make sure yours is the correct size and make sure you follow the TAS requirements for battery's. I then pack everything inside and put a label listing all items on the outside of the case so TAS can read it if need be. The only problem I have had is they are usually curious as to what, how and where it is used at. It may even help to place a photograph of you and the machine next to the itemized list also. As far as digging tools and etc. they are packed in my checked luggage and has never been a problem. Have a good trip. JB

Gulf side of FL is nt known for Spanish treasure, unfortunately. It's the Atlantic side that has the ship wrecks.

The Gulf side is known for buried Spanish treasure. So do a lot of research before you leave.

Them tricky Spaniards, leaving their buried treasure all over like that!
Here, I lived in FL for years and never knew there might have been a Spanish treasure chest in my backyard.

Dang! :rage:

Lee Hurtado, of Leighi? Acres, was a member / dealer of the old Ther;s Association..He used to drive around with a small TUB of Cobs in the trunk of his car..They were found on the West Coast..Speaking of buried, does anyone know the location of a bridge in the N Orlando area.Had a road going to it and none on the other side..This would have been in the sixties..Pretty darn stupid when you forget how to get to your main starting point....Cordially Nad

Thanks alot guys. My GMT arrives today and it truly is a freakin heat wave. It's in the low 50's and the wife wants me to get the kids out. I know what I'll try doing. Woo Hoo! I appreciate all the info and aditional factiods.. This is a family vacation, so I'll have a couple days on the beach and will probably just mostly want to get the boy excited about the new hobby. I'm gonna buy him a tesoro compadre and just have it sent to where we're goin in FL. t breaks down well, so I don' t think getting it back will be a prob. Still not sure what I'll do about getting the GMT there. Don't have time now to get a case for the GMT, so I may have to leave my new baby at home this trip and just see what the compadre will do for us. ANyone had any experience using a compadre on saltwater beaches?
Thanks again guys,
Greg

in a regular (soft) detector bag and stow it in the over head bin. I do keep a watchful eye on it until all luggage is stowed, but in dozens of trips over the year's, I have never had a problem. HH jim tn
