TIP for CZ users who hunt in the rain with rain proof CZ's

This little tip is regarding your headphone plug.

During the rainy season I like to line my headphone plug with a small amount of vaseline.

Only put a small amount around the rim of the plug where the plug comes into contact with the outside of the control box.

Thus when I plug my headphones into my CZ-70 PRO... I have made a tight little seal with ointment that helps keep out any little drips from running down my headphone cable and into my control box.

Old CZ-6a trick ;)

Weather resistant not rainproof especially with the digital models..
First thing they will tell you if one leaks...Little plastic bag over the box just makes me feel more content...Had a CZ6A leak because the rubber was crimped but during the trip to Fisher it dried out. Nice people at Fisher cleaned it and recalibrated anyway.Heck 2 sides to any story as one fellow hoses his off after every saltwater beach hunt with no problems....

...if you look at the official CZ-70 Pro manual, it clearly says that it is "Splashproof, rainproof, and dustproof". And I have hunted in the pouring rain with mine with no problem, though that is NOT my normal desire. And I've seen people stand them up against the Virginia Beach boardwalk during a multiple hunt while waiting for a rain to pass and the display face was pooled up with water and later they just dumped it out and rocked on. Not that I would do that myself. And let's also keep in mind that most people's headphones are NOT waterproof, so even though the detector may be fine the phones may not be. Me, if I am going out in the rain for some reason or feel I may get caught in it and have the CZ, I carry one of those little Saran Wrap clear plastic pie covers...looks like a little baby shower cap...covers the control box nicely. I also think the tip about a little Vaseline (or silicone, perhaps) around the headphone plug base couldn't hurt for those inclined to make a habit of hunting in the rain.

But just for the record, Fisher HAS advertised the fact that the CZ-70 is "Rainproof" and it's in the manual.

that said water proof on the back, but now even diver watches that are good for 300-400 feet say water resistent and not water proof.

So I wonder if someone went out hunting in a down pour and some water leaked inside the control box and caused a short if Fisher would honor their warranty or claim neglect on the owners part.

I asked a Fisher rep on the phone once and she sounded a lot less reassuring than the book. The idea was that if you get caught in the rain or are such a nut that you want to hunt in a LIGHT rain then you'll probably be OK, but they don't recommend hunting in the rain per say.

I have a Minelab Excalibur for wet situations. As for the CZ, if I get caught in the rain and it looks like it's not going to stop I usually pack it in and head home. I just don't worry about the machine on the way to the truck.

And I would keep that manual in case you have to send away..due to a crimped rubber or perhaps one drop of water leaking in the port for the headphone jack..CZ-20 is waterproof and would be my suggestion if you hunt in the rain. Otherwise from a drop of water entering during a light rainfall to a fellow hosing off after hunting is your call. I seem to remember Fisher advising to hunt in a light rain at best and changes being made to call them rain resistant and I have heard both so its your call. Myself if it starts to rain place my droprag over the box and head for the car and wish I had a CZ-20 to keep on hunting...Nothing is 100 percent and with my luck would be the 1 percentile....I would bet if you called Fisher(rainproof) would not be a word used by the Fisher Lab people...Good point Mike and certainly debateable....

Good tip LW.I think it is also advisable to put some duct tape over the speaker. Most of us seldom use the thing any way and the tape is easy to peel off.

I sealed off my speaker using some plastic from a freezer bag and a bunch of electrical tape.

And with some vaseline around the headphone plug, my CZ-70 PRO is now completely rain proof.

It peels off easily, yes. And then if you need to, you could use some "Goo Gone" on the little bit of adhesive left on there...harmless to plastic. I have removed it and cleaned it off before. It's primary purpose is to keep dirt and stuff out of there because the speaker is sealed. But a little extra protection in case of leakage never hurt. Doesn't really matter much to me...the chance of it ever getting wet is slim, as though the MACHINE might be "Rainproof" it's OWNER isn't!
