Tip for changing coils quickly

I don't know if you've had this problem, but changing the coils can be a pain in the ass. Getting the twisty cord through the length of the shaft can be problematic. I've found an easy workaround. Just carry a length of string with a small fishing weight on one end, and tie the other end around the connector. Drop the weight end through the shaft, and pull the cord out, connect and untie. Voila!

I just find a clear area and whip the shaft. But I agree. It is a pain changing coils. The part I hate is rotating the shaft. Before this hunting season is over I think I'll need a new lower. The stop ring on mine is looking worn.

I don't have any problem at all changing the coils on mine. I don't even have to take it apart. Just slide the lower shaft all the way in. Pull back the box to get to the connectors, undo the coil bolt and pull out the coil cable. Mine goes back in really easy with no issues. I did pull the coil wire on the new 6" to stretch it out a little. I like the fact that it has the short piece of plastic made onto the coil cable to help get the cable going. I was hesitant about it at first till my buddy Rick showed me how easy it is. Takes about 3 minutes to do.

Yea I don't find it difficult at all. Just a little shaking sometimes if necessary to get the connector to pop out, connect it, done.

I agree with surfman & nolanation. It gets easier with practice. One trick I use is to get the rod length set to where it is just right for me and then I marked the lower shaft with a red permanent marker. Now when I collapse the shaft to change the coil I know exactly were to set the lower shaft; no more fiddling around trying to get it back where it was.

One trick that I use is to thread the coil wire into the lower shaft before attaching the coil to the lower rod. That gives you quite a few extra inches to push the wire end to the connector. Then screw on the connector and attach the lower rod onto the coil. That works best for me.

That's how I do it Dwayne. Very easy. I think it's easier than changing coils on my Explorer. Joe

yup, that's the way to go!
