I hit a freshwater beach in an area with a lot of volcanic rock & black sand. I was test driving a new detector-Fisher F5- and hit a noisy patch with multiple targets. I started clearing the 1st target-a tab & saw a flash of gold in the sand. 10K ring very thin-it weighed 1.14 Grams on the scale.
I took a break & threw the ring on the sand to check the VDI#...I got a barely audible blip of a rejected target. Huh???. I checked the GB & it was fine... I checked my other settings, zero disc & thresh gain adjustments didn't get a clear signal no matter what. In all metal it hit fine. The VDI is just in the foil range.
Since I was going to do some wading & I had doubts about my new machine-I went back to my van & got my Tesoro Silver that I have in a water box. When I got to the beach I went to the exact same spot & threw the ring on the ground. Surely the Silver will nail it...Nope-not a blip.Backed down the disc & same same. In all metal the silver hit it hard to about 6".m I have a GB adjustor on this machine also so that was not the cause of the masking. Just the limitations of the machines I guess.
So much for ever using disc on this beach. I'm pretty sure this applies to other sandy beaches in my area. The thin gold is almost invisible with the average detector in disc no matter how low the setting. In a way it leaves me an advantage but I wonder how many I've missed in areas I used disc on...
