When I was ten our family didn't have a whole heck of a lot of money. Groceries were often hard to come by and I was very lucky if I got my 10 cent weekly allowance. One Saturday morning I was playing in a park with a few of my friends and found a $20 bill being held by the wind on the backstop behind a ball diamond. I swear I stared at it for 30 seconds before grabbing it. When I showed my friends it was decided that we should go to the show.

The ticket seller grilled us for a while about where the money had come from but finally accepted the story. Two Jungle Jim's and a Tarzan movie with cartoons cost 25 cents a head. We all got popcorn, Cokes and licorice Nib's for another 35 cents each.

On the way home we stopped at Loblaw's and I bought everyone these spring loaded plastic guns that fired little silver painted Plaster of Paris balls. I think they were 29 cents each with 100 pieces of ammo. Another stop at the corner store got us each a pop (12 cents with the 2 cent bottle deposit) potato chips and a chocolate bar for 10 cents an item.

We sat around outside the store and ate that and then decided to spend the rest on candy. Blackballs were 3 for a penny and caramel's were 2 for a penny. I forget what else we bought but we probably went home with a couple of pounds of candy each.

When I walked in the door grinning from ear to ear and proceeded to excitedly tell my mother the whole story. My Mom was not in the habit of hitting her kids but she just about friken killed me that day.
