Tightwad money hoarder once lived at this homestead

Joel-Winnipeg

New member
Have the opportunity to hunt this old place and the buildings are all still standing.
The old man built the place in the late 1890s and was know to hide his money all over the place.
This was brought to light by the present owner finding old silver in the garden. Old turn of the century silver dollars.
My dilemma is I'll be going with three detectors one being the ACE 250 and two others.
This is a three hour drive site from here and one day only go at it !
Two of the detectors will be used by first time users so will train them before the hunt that would be like on the job training
The site from what I'm told hold lots of iron trash.
What I plan on doing is bury a glass iron ring sealer of silver coins and get the two newbies to practice on those signals and disc out the iron signals.
As the actual site I'm going in blind but have read many possible location to look for and lots of these
came from experiences that the posters have posted on this site dating back two years.
Does any one know or think of anything that I missed or could tell me of possible info to help in this hunt ?
This is going to happen for me on the 30 th of this month.
Thanks for any info and if anything comes of it I'll post

Big tress, fence posts, anything unusual. Why just the 1 day? Won't the owner let you come back?

The property is sold to new owners and the present owners is moving to the coast.
Its a three hour drive from where I live so I figured about 6 hour hunt which I have no problem with
but the newbies swing a detector may not hold up as long .

Good luck Joel look for natural landmarks corners of the house and yes TREES etc. I can't wait to see what you find!!

Good luck bud, sounds like a great day for you and your 250!

here's some tips when looking for jars/tins of coins run all metal & listen for bigger signals in pinpoint then "DIG THEM ALL", also practising on a berried jar of silver is a really great idea  spend a lot of time listening to the signal & how it pinpoints.
don't forget to dig single silver coin signals as some times jars get broken & the coins get spread about. if your really serious about finding jars/tins of loot in a one off 6 hour hunt forget about digging small targets that signal under silver as time is of the essence.
swing low & slow & try to cover the hole area, don't hunt willy nilly set an area to each member on the hunt & tell them to grid it all, start from the most likely loot hiding area to the least likely hiding area that way if ya do miss an area at the end of the day the chance of missing loot is lower.
check all rocks/ paths/ or movable items for signals underneath.
not all loot was put in glass jars i"d say a large portion were put in iron items like cook pots, kettles, tobacco tins, & others so dig big iron.
good luck finding an awesome find & don't forget to post if ya do.

Too cool!:super:Sounds promising!:detecting:Make sure those newbies pick up their trash targets. Dig everything. Best of luck to ya'. Happy Hunting!:)

I hope you hit big. My only advice is to dig everything but to dig smart. I've read a few books about cache hunting. Keep in mind that caches were normally located so they could be watched from the house. Probably from out a back window. They had to be secret enough so nobody else would find them, or see the owner retrieving or adding money, but easy enough to find so not lost by the owners. IOW it won't be out in the middle of the cornfield. Under fence posts, and around rock walls, seem to be a prime spots. The floors of barns and outbuildings also seem to hide a lot of caches. If I saw a big flat stone I'd be inclined to swing over it or move it and swing over the ground.

Look for the old clothesline and check out that area good too. Also tree swings and under nice shady trees.

It is a daunting task ahead of you. Good luck.

Chris

lucky bugger ! when ever you can actually get good intel ! the cards are certainly in ur favour. Dig like a dog ! and make sure u get picks!

Make sure you check any chicken coops or any place they held livestock that would alert the farmer of an intruder! Thats my 2 cents! Good luck and post some pic's!:garrett:

I'd let the newbies know up front I'd be staying a full day so no whining to leave before the day is up.

And make sure they have something to keep them entertained (video games, playing cards, magazines, radio - whatever you think they'd like) when they're sick of digging trash and you're just getting warmed up!

Sounds like a great opportunity - good luck!

The only problem is that the neewbies are mid 50s to early sixties:rofl:

Lots of interesting suggestions, but I'd go with Lazy Assie. Ah hell, there are multiple angles to play here, have fun. I'd keep it simple though. Pop it into Jewelry mode, crank it up as high as it will remain stable and grid it out. Silver quarters sound off like Hiroshima on my ACE so a silver dollar could be found by a blind man with one arm. If you start to hit the goodies go custom and notch out the crud. Interestingly enough I was in school last year with a guy who said that his grandfather was a notorious money hoarder, and no one knew were it was. He's from Winterpeg also but I think that grand pappy was in central or southern Manitoba. Good luck buddy and don't take it hard if it craps out. Sometimes it goes that way.....or not. I wish you all the luck nonetheless.
