TIGHTEN UPPER SHAFT ON EXPLORE XS

diggervance

New member
hello ALL,
ON MY EXPLORE XS THE UPPER SHAFT KEEPS WORKING ITS WAY OUT OF THE HOUSING.there is a hair line crack where it tightens down. is there any way to fix this and tighten the shaft to the con troll housing.
Thanks diggervance

Back in the early days (around 2000) here on Findmall we all seemed to find that placing a small balloon (that fit tightly) over the end of the upper shaft worked fantastic.
My buddy still has one on his old XS he still uses it to this day.
As far as the small crack:
Is it at the Cam-lock for which Minelab used to replace the housing for when they where in warranty.
Being it will obviously not be in warranty I would at-least put some 2 part epoxy on it to keep it from cracking further.
Be sure you test a small area first as some high strength epoxy melts plastic if it is not intended for it.
Hope this helped.

Thanks Mike
This forum is outstanding what an easy fix that I never would have thought of.

My buddy Lee has an old XS also and his cam lock broke in the housing where the upper shaft goes in. Unfortunately, the only way to fix it is to have the housing replaced, but since the XS is so outdated I doubt that Minelab can do anything. Right now he has duct tape holding his shaft in the housing. Not the prettiest site to look at , but whatever works. He is looking to find a used SE, so if anyone out there is wanting to get rid of their SE send me a PM and I will pass it onto him. I still have my old XS and she is still working fine and looks almost brand new, but wouldn't part with her. If my SE Pro ever goes bonkers at least I have my XS as a backup.

Minelab had a call back on the problem years ago where they corrected the problem and replaced whom ever sent in their XS, but you had to be the original owner, and now that they have discontinued the XS, you'll need to find one that someone is selling that was either up graded or after they corrected the flaw. Your best bet, call MineLab and find out when they had corrected the problem and take it from there. I have a buddy that only hunts with the XS, it is one of the more stable of all the XS Explorers, beside the SE and then the more stable SE Pro, which I hunt with now... Good Luck and HH.
