Tiger Shark

Hey All,

After a couple years of clad and relic hunting I wanted to expand my hunting options and picked up a Tiger shark. A few of the guys from the club have them and thier finds showed this is a excellent machine. I've used Garrett for 4 yrs as well as the Explorer 2 for a couple of them which i like both just in different ways. Does anyone have any suggestions for this machine as I'm a first timer to tesoro. I thought having a beep and dig would be a nice change of pace as I don't mind digging everything till I learn the sounds given. Also does anyone use this machine outside of water? I've read that it still a good machine on land just be ready to dig deep.

The TS is a great water and beach machine. It's main drawback as an everyday land machine is the weight.
You may be better served by any of the other Tesoro models designed for dirt digging (ill let others chime in here on specific model reccommendations, but you can't go wrong with any of them, and all work well in sand)
If you are in or really near to water when you hunt, a waterproof water machine as the TS is the way to go for peac
Nothing kills the buzz of a good day at the beach like accidentally dunking a land detector!
Whatever you decide, remember that the lifetime warranty applies only to original owners purchasing a new unit from an authorized dealer. I'm not knocking used ones as Tesoros are very reliable. It's just something to keep in mind.
Have fun and keep us posted.
Cheers

I did notice when I got the TS it deffinately has some weight so I was just going to run it attached to my belt. I've never been much for water but I'm always in older areas that just call to me to hunt. It seems this machine will be a challenge with different sounds but I found the same thing when I moved from Garrett to minelab. Anyone have any suggestions on setting?

Hi nova74,

There are three internal controls on the Tiger Shark, volume, threshold and sensitivity. I set the volume first by setting to motion disc. mode and waving a coin over the coil and setting it to a comfortable level.,,,,,,,then switch to all-metal fast and set the threshold audio to a comfortable low humming audio. The sensitivity setting should not allow the Tiger to chatter or become unstable, I bought mine new and adjusted it a little 'hotter' than the factory setting. Learning to ground balance should not be a problem, just read the instruction manual, I bought mine before the treasure forums were even started on the internet, if I can do it so can you. I hunt in the motion disc. mode and pinpoint in that mode too.To get the small gold chains run at minimum disc., several guys around here want to hear it all including bobby pins,.... me, I run the disc. at between 2 and 3 and that will nab the small gold rings.

Hunting in the water is a whole lot different than land hunting, get aquainted with your TS before venturing into deeper water. You will need a good long handled water scoop and I soon bought one, you might check in on the water and beach forum and ask the people there what scoop is the best for your needs.GL&HH

I have one year on the Tiger. It is amazing in the water, just amazing. In the water I have hunted 2 ways. First if the area is relatively clean of trash and sandy, I will hunt in all metal mode with a slight background threshold hum. Listen for the changes in threshold and dig. Be prepared to dig deep and everything this way. On land using this method I can hit all the 10" coins in my test garden and get faint hints of the 12" coins. If not hunting this way, hunt in disc mode with the disc set no higher than 3. Overall 2 is a good setting and will knock out most nails or make them scratchy sounding. In the water you use a long handled scoop and scoop all good sounding targets so disc. ia a mute point anyway. In the water size the target up with the coil and with a little practice you can tell a clean round target from odd shaped crap. Be prepared to scoop bottlecaps, if you want coins and rings, it comes with the turf!

On land it is not the greatest detector in my opinion just because the disc on the Tiger is not like the disc on their land machines. For instance if you can disc out a pulltab you will be at max disc. This will give a big loss of depth. I have used it on land and it is not my first choice for this. In the water it is KING. For land consider something like a Silver uMax. Great detector, decent depth, excellent disc., and great target separation for about $250.

There are many good replies here. One thing I tried once is I run a belt through the slots an the box. I hip mounted it. It worked OK. I just didnt like all that extra coil wire hanging out. Gets in my way. I just wanted to try that to see how I liked it. I dont.. The Silver uMax. is a darn good land detector. Very light. Easy to use.. That TS is a hell of a gold getter.. Be ready to dig. I only use mine in the water... KEN , IND..

An excellent detector, well balanced and I'd reccomend the 10" coil. I had an old one which I could switch from 8 to the 10.5" and I never used the 8", always the 10.5. A very good detector!

I'm with Ken, I only use the Tiger in the water. Freshwater that is. It excels there, simply amazing. I tried it for land, but the Silver is good on land and just plain easy to use, light weight, and effective.

The machine I bought I'm able it change out the coil I believe I have the 8". Next I have to pick up a scoop. Any suggestions of 1 and why you like it, whether its light, strong, scoop size, design (rounded vs pointed: pro/con). Also is there a scoop on the market with a telescoping handle, reason I ask is I work for the railroad and travel to different town in a daily basis and need something that's compact.

I appreciate all the suggestions on this machine and will put the time in to learn it. I've been using the minelab explorer 2 as my main machine for the last 1-1/2 yrs to learn it and have enjoyed it a lot but sometimes its nice just putting on the headphone setting up the machine once and loosing yourself faint sounds and non digital screen.
