Tiger shark disc. question.

Hi everyone, I have a new tiger shark and have not yet been able to get it out in the water as of yet. Hopefully the lakes and rivers will be back down to normal levels before long. I was out testing some targets in the yard and I have a question about disc. setting on iron. I tested a rusty nail and kept turning the disc. up to try to eliminating it but no matter how high I set my disc. I could still hear the rusty nail. Is this normal?

No that is not nomal .Are you sure you was in dis mode and not in all metal. It should sart to dis out nails about 2. some hunt around 3 or 4 but you will lose thin chains.I usually hunt all metal then switch to dis 2 and do not dig much iron at all.Iron will sound sharp and short ever thing else will sound smooth unless it is deep or very small it will then have a duck (quack) sound. deep iron will sound like a chicken (chirp)or no sound at all

ok, I just went out and tested the tiger shark again on several rusty iron nails and they all sounded off with a weird chirping sound is the best I can describe it. I was in disc. mode and turned my disc all the way down and then all the way up and then to 3 and still iron sounded off. The sound did change a little when I tried different swing speeds. Is there any video's out there of the sounds the tiger shark makes or doesn't make? Am I doing something wrong? Should the tiger shark go silent on big rusty iron nails? Thanks all for the help and HH.

How big of a nail are we talking about?you may not be able to disc out a 20 penny spike but there not many of them in the water.try it on a bobby pin if can not it to disc it out your internal sensitivity setting maybe to hot.

as said by pull taber you should not be having a problem with nails.
But also if you are not digging some hair pins you are not finding all the gold.just a word from the old and not so wise

I used to run at disc of 2-3 and never dug any nails and only on occasion a bottle cap using that setting; those that I did dig were either crushed flat into a coin shape or did not sound very good. Make sure your ground balance is pretty good as well. Are you air testing or on the ground? Air test you should not hear them at all; on the ground you still should not hear them but may be getting some noise from other metals in the ground or mineralization. Check GB, check batteries, clean out coil cover if you have one, make sure cable is secured to pole and not flopping, if you have a coil connector make sure it's snug. All else fails give a call to Tesoro.

Thanks for the replies. I have not touched any of the internal settings. I just bought the tiger shark about 2 weeks ago. I am checking the nails on the ground but I know the ground is very clean. It does not seem to be running erratic so I think the sensitivity is ok. I have not reset the factory settings. I have checked several nails and the biggest being about a 16 penny and smaller. It is picking up all the nails. I will air test the nails tomorrow and also check a bobby pin. Thanks all.

Pointer80, do the nails pick up with a nice clean tone like a coin or is the tone jagged or double beeping on the nail? I have a new Tiger Shark and will do some testing later on this weekend and get back to you.

Hi Rainyday101, The sound it makes on nails is like a clunk or a little thud. I talked to Rusty at Tesoro today and I might have been swinging my coil too slow over the nail. He said you cannot swing really slow or it will sound off on nails. I will test that this week end as well. Thanks all and HH.

If you keep turning up the discrimination you should be able to eliminate foil and nickels as you go higher. At that point you should get no sound on iron.
Remember, in metal detecting, size matters. Large iron pieces will still be detected at a discrimination setting where small iron is not. I can discriminate out iron at around 2-3 as noted above on coin size pieces. If your detector does not chatter then the sensitivity is probably OK.
