Tiger Shark and SALT WATER

Hello, this is my first post on the Tesoro board. I am looking for a good water machine to use mostly on fresh water beaches in TN and MS, and am considering going over to the "Dark Side" and getting a Tesoro. From what I have been reading the Tiger Shark pretty much fits the bill for that task, I would get a machine I can get as wet as I want, and be able to descriminate out ferrous metal. My question is how does it do on salt water beaches at the surf line? I don't want to buy a detector that I couldn't use on vacation, but I really don't want a PI unit that I can't descriminate out nails and such, any ideas??

I like this detector alot. Its saltwater mode works great. I have had it underwater and on the surf. It is alot of fun and works great. I just got the 10.5" coil and am going to hit the surf tommarow am.

I to am thinking about getting this detector. However, I have never owned a Tesoro brand detector. Can anyone tell us how the Tiger Shark stacks up against the Whites and Minelab equivalents?

Thanks for posting this question. I want to buy a new water detector this spring, but cannot seem to decide. I am in the same dilemma, I will be using the machine mostly to hunt fresh water up here in the Great Lakes, but..I also go on vacation at least once a year to Mexico or Florida, and want to hunt in the salt. It is hard for me to justify spending a $1000 on a machine that I will only really need once a year, and even up here in Michigan, I still will do most of my hunting on land with my GT. I have been considering either the Beach ID or the Tiger Shark. Aaron

Thank you all for your replies, I think this is the one for me, if anyone else has any more input please post it, it seems like there are a few of us out there considering this machine. I got my Tesoro catalog in the mail Saturday, and it was pretty non descript on the capabilities of the Tiger Shark. Thank you all!!

With the CSC it actually works very well in salt water. I love it for fresh water and land hunting. Just wish they would make 10" widescan for it.

Seems like a lot of us are considering this machine, any more input??

I hear ya, I have been looking hard at a water machine, and the Tiger Shark seems to be the way to go. I won't buy anything that won't descriminate out iron, and from what I have read, you can't with the PI units. If I am wrong someone PLEASE speak up.

Joe,

If I may, you said the magic word that can make a difference for sure, that is Fresh Water....

For fresh water hunting, I'de go up against any other detector out there, to do what you said you wanted to do with your detector needs..

The Tiger Shark is just that, a Tiger in the fresh water, great depth, great performance on small and fine gold items and good disc....My screen name was based on this detector alone, TigerNed..

Downside, and all detectors have them, the Tiger Shark doesn't work in the Salt Water as described..
Let me rephase that, Doen't work in Salt water around here in New England.........I've heard it does in some parts of the country, but not around here........
I could never get it to ground balance in the salt water, I could use it in the sand close to and into the wet sand even. But when submerged in the salt water itself, bad news..

But as I said before, if using in the fresh water, I truly think it's hard to beat.......

Good Luck..
Tiger Ned

Thanks for the reply, 95% of all water hunting I will do will be in fresh water (or rain). The only time I would need to use it in salt would be on vacation... maybe. I am in Memphis, and we definatly don't have any salt water beaches around here, but there is the Ms. River bank, beaches in Sardis and Enid Ms, etc.
Thank You for your replies!
Joe

Joe,

If you do get the Shark, get to know your Disc. limits.......The more disc you use, the greater amount of depth you will lose....Try all metal sometimes, once you learn what the shark is saying to you, you will know good from bad signals...

I could tell you all day if I was going to did a barbie pin or not (hair pin) just by the sound they make..

And try to learn what I call the Duck Quack, sounds like a duck to me. But you'll be the one guacking when you dig up that gold.....I like to call it the golden egg quack...

Nice to see the Shark works down south in the salt, but not in Ct waters...

Thank you for your help, it was between a Garrett Sea Hunter II and the Tiger Shark. I think I would be much better served by the VLF machine since there is no salt around here. Do you have any theories as to why you are having problems with ground balance in your part of the country?
