TIDs,Tone IDs...

Bowie

New member
help us to decide to dig or not. Im not familiar with all make and models of detectors but only have read of different persons experiences.
Some say their machine is accurate to only a few inches and some say there machine can identify really deep targets.
I know the soil mineralization and trash in the ground has influence on the TID and Tone ID also.
And I also know its fun to use them, and can save you time on a fast hunt.
My XL Pro has a meter but no tone id. My M6 has TID and Tone ID.
Is there a detector that has only Tone ID?
Are the accuracy of Tone ID and VID the same, if all things are equal??
Im spoiled and thats bad. I wanna rely on my bells and whistles to much. I have been looking at other meterless detectors such as Minelabs Musky Advantage and several Tesoros. I guess I could just cover up my meters but I dont know if I have the will power, lol.

The Tesoro golden has tone ID and the Minelab soveriegn gt also has tone ID.
I don't have either one of these detectors so I can't elaborate on there performance.
Hopefully someone else can help.
I do have the musketeer and have found some nice things with it.
I tend to do better by using a beep, dig type machine rather than one with visual ID if I am searching old homesites, because I rely less on the visual and concentrate on the quality of the sounds.
Hope this helps some.

Hi Bowie,

I'm a beep an digger.

A display can give you a bunch of word, numbers, screens and choices that in the end tell you it may be a quarter, dime, penny or nickel. It also tells you it may be junk or gold at the sametime:blink: That's the jest of it. Woopy Dee.

You don't need a display to tell you that. It's like watching TV while you are hunting.

I think you've all been told "you can see what's in the ground before you dig". They have been trying to get that to work for a long time. The truth is you dont need all that hype. All you need is good set of headphones.

This happened yesterday. It's a true story:

I was detecting around a swimming pool. A man who I have met before came by with his Whites MXT.

I was using a meterless Tesoro Euro Sabre.

We detected togather for a while and I got a response on a penny. Just out of quriosity I asked Tom to check the response with hisn MXT. He said his TID said penny. I dug a penny.

A little later I got a response on a nickel and asked Tom to check it. He said it was a nickel or a pull tab. I said it was a nickel and I dug a nickel. It's easy for me to tell the difference between a nickel and a pull tab. They don't sound anything alike.

After a while he got a response on something and asked me to check it. I checked it and said it sounded like a pull tab. He said, "are you sure it's not a gold ring?" I said no but it sounds like a pull tab. It was a pull tab. I'm not wrong on common items often.

Tom asked me. "Do you dig pull Tabs?"

I responded by pulling a hand full of pull tabs form my pocket. We got a good laugh out of that.

Tom has been metal detecting sense 1969.

Tom dug four or five coins. Plus a little trash.

I dug a dozen coins and some jewelry during the same period.

As far as quick recovery. The Silver uMax is one of the most popular Compition Models. Most Comp. Machines don't have displays to slow them down.

Some rely on the TID for compition. I think they are in the minority.

A while back I thought a display was the way to go. Boy was that wrong. I was simply frustrated.

Now I'm on a role. My gold and preshious stone booty is growing as never before.

To me, it's a no-brainer.

The Minelab Sovereigns I think have 17 different tones ,but some of these tones in discriminate can be adjusted or notched out.The Sovereign Visual ID meter's plug in-line between the control box and coil and the ID numbers correspond with the tone pitch.Sovereign's are probably the easiest unit to install a visual ID.The deepest I ID-ed a dime with the tone and Visual ID with a Sovereign at 12 inches.

I hunt most of the time with a Troy X5 if the signal sounds promising I dig last year I didn't get out until July picked up 12 silver rings 5 gold 8 chains and 357.00 in clad, as well as digging 17 pounds of junk. Dan

Tape a piece of paper over your M6 screen. Flip the trigger forward. Set the disc to 9 O'clock and dig all repeatable beeps. If you want old school then set the trigger in the center and slowly turn your disc knob to see where your targets quit beeping. This is a manual TID. Unless your a beep dig hunter you will be thumbing your disc knob on a non metered machine anyway. The visual TID gives you a lot of info and it's nice to have. I wouldn't sell your M6 for a non metered detector when a simple piece of paper will turn it into one.

I think your right Khouse. I've read good things from satisfied M-6 owner's.

The things they said convinced me of the fine qualities of the M-6.

The only thing is the weight. Ouch!!!

It sounds like a keeper though. Just use a little tape and a lot less discrimination. To learn, you have to experience. Not discriminate. Make sure you got quality headphones designed for metal detecting. Then you can become the discreminator. It's the third most important thing. First is the brain. Second is the metal detector. Third is the headphones.

As far as beep and diggers go. We have been designated beep and diggers. Not because we dig all targets(admittedly that's bogus). But because of the detectors we use.

Simply because I use a certain machine I am constantly proclaimed a beep and digger by even the best.

They think I am. I think I am. Therefore I am:blink:

I have come enjoy the humor. It's like ethnic humor, but your not putting down a race or religion.

I enjoy being a beep and digger. As long as the discriminating jewelry leavers keep doing their "quality hunting".

When I dumped the TID, I learned how to hunt what they miss. And bubba that's a lot.

That's what B&D stands for in my signature. Beep and Digger:)

HH,

Here's some of the stuff they left me.

I bought my first meter-less machine on 9/11/07. It took me about a month to learn how and to start trying to find small jewelry. On 11/22/07 I took this photo.

This is the result of my first six weeks of jewelry finding. Minus a few items that didn't make it into the photos.

There's some gold, some diamonds and other stones.

That may not be a big deal to a lot of the pros, but I'm proud of it.

I started out this year with a 14k gold diamond ring worth lots more than I paid for the Silver Sabre uMax I found it with. I found it in a hunted out trashy spot.

I think it's good for starters.

HH,

I know i'm bragging and i'm sorry.

I have been over come with this hobby.

It stimulates me to keep doing something healthy.

It's physically easy enough I can do it.

My body is not working like a young one.

MDing makes me feal like I'm still good at something.

This forum gives me a place to brag about it.

It's a difficult thing when I can't do the things I did in the past.

I'm going to keep metal detecting as long as I can make it to the site.:)

Happy Hunting,

You go Tabdog! Please let me know any helpful hints you pick up, MDing stories, and of course, the booty you score!
