TID or monotone?

Went out hunting today with the 70 set at monotone and a modified coin pattern. I tried to set it up like my old whites unit for some nice relaxing coin hunting. I noticed that in monotone, good targets didn't seem to hit as hard and clear as when using 3 or 4 tones. Didn't come upon anything over 6 inches to see if the audio in mono would change with depth. Maybe just me.

Has anyone out there used both of the new 6 inch coils? What advantages does one have over the other? Is there a loss of depth with the DD? I do alot of park and yard hunting so maybe the DD would be the way to go. Any advice?

Thanks

The depth of detection won't change according to how many tones you are listening to. However, it may make a difference in which targets you hear clearly. And hearing a tone is the first step in recovering the target. I have had those darn crickets chirping in my ears most of the time! (too many years working with high-freq communication equipment). Even so, I have no problem sorting out the 4 tone mode. Part of that stems from using the 4-tone X-50 for several months before testing the X-70. Personally, I don't use the multi-tone (?99 or 28?) mode because at a certain point, they seem to run together. I'm sure Explorer users would find them useful. The 4-tone mode provides all the information I need to make a digging decision. I have trained myself to ignore the low tones, confirm the mid-low tones, and dig the mid-high and high tones that are consistent.

As to the small coil decision..... I have them both, tested them both, and was surprised by my findings. My soil is moderately mineralized. So I don't have need for the "cancellation" attributres of the DD design. In all the other X-Terra coils, I prefer the concentric over the DD. And I prefer the lower frequencies over the 18.75. But in the small coil, I can't see much difference in depth of detection between the two coils, on coins. I do believe that I can separate targets better with the DD. But as I've said before, I have a tendency to hunt with the one that has provided the most success. And when it has success, you will use it more. and so on, and so on, and so on! The first day I used the 6-inch DD, I found some nice old coins. Not to say that the concentric wouldn't have hit them as well. It would. But I was using the DD that day and have pretty much stuck with it. JMHO HH Randy
