threshold

I don't believe you will, treshold is shut down when an item is detected or causes a null. I would say in most cases that a setting where the threshold is either just audible or just unaudible is a safe setting.

I feel you will lose a little depth without a threshold and also with out the threshold you wont know if you are going too fast and nulling out a good target. To me the threshold tell you a lot about the target.

Yes you will, it will be at the extreme limits, but a target thats just barly coming in maybe fading in andout from threshold will sound like falses with no threshold to judge it by..Another thing is you wont know when your into iron or disced out targets, and you need to slow down when that happens and if you dont know you may go through the area to fast. Better off setting the threshold at lowest level and turning down the headphones to a comfortable level, I sure wish they had put one more level of audible threshold myself, cause the lowest setting is too loud with max volume on the phones for me also in quiet areas.. or maybe we are using too good a set of headphones

On depth alone:
I've done threshold testing --air, since it's easier than testing "on the fringes" targets buried in the field. The results showed clearly that a setting of 7(just audible) achieved the exact same depth as a setting of 6(just under threshold, or no threshold). Also, the highest and lowest settings of 0 and 20 though a bit harder to test still show no differences in depth.
My take on threshold......I run my threshold at 7 (just audible), I have run it that way since day one. I'm 110% agreeable with the idea that having an audible threshold is better than no threshold for the reasons already posted, but does the Explorer lose depth with no threshold present? my test show it doesn't. I like to hear everything that happens, nulling, and any changes in the threshold are very important to be able to hear when fine hunting. A null alerting you to a target may when further analyzed ultimately give a good tone and can end up producing a goodie(which does happen)....that is why having threshold is the way to go, but I don't consider that getting deeper, I call it just better hunting.
