Threshold

I need a opinion, is it normal for the threshold hum to cut in and out or should it be a steady hum? I am new to the Explorer, read the book a couple of times but can't seem to locate the answer. I had the explorer on factory preset turn on, sens was on 16, the threshold cuts in and out. HH Lil Ben

Hi LB
The cutting in and out is the Explorer nulling over rejected targets, I hunt with little or no threshold hum. TB

Tom the detector is just on, not detecting. I know that it will do this when searching and you pass it over a target that is notched. But mine cuts in and out just sitting there. HH Lil Ben

If you are in a building it can cut in and out or if you lay the detector on the ground there are times when it seems to run wild. This is external noise or gound compensation circuits working.
However, outside in the normal hunting position with the coil not in motion with no targets and Semi-auto the threshold should be rock solid. It should stay solid unless a target is rejected or detected. This would indicate the detector is working properly so you can go from there with the setting you like.

No one say you have to use the threshold, but to an experienced detectorist its an invaluable tool...
Indeed you got the correct answers from previous posts..

I think you are correct Dan and also feel we may drop a littel depth with no threshold. The detectors that are designed to run with no threshold have circuts that keep the point of operation just below audio and keep it from drifting lower. Some detectors will have a serious drop in depth as there are no consideration for silent threshold to keep the point of no audio just a hair below hearing a sound.
I don't know about the Explorer as I like to hear a threshold all the time so have never used it with no threshold. I feel like the soil is talking to me and I know what is going on with soil minerals and the rest of the matrix. But as you know there are guys that use machines that have no threshold and love them.
Have a good one,
HH, Cody

Took the explorer outside away from all interference and the threshold was rock solid. The explorer must be powerful, other detectors that I have you can air test all day long in the house with no problems. Now if I can just get my arms around the other features of this animal I think I'll be on to something.
