Threshold

When you swing the coil searching do you still hear the hum or does it disappear like mine does?
then when I stop moving the detector I hear the hum again.
is this normal.

Grizzel, I ask a question about the threshold hum a few days ago but mine was going away when I got close to power lines. The only response I got was to try the Noise Cancel button. But from what I read, if the hum goes away the detector is nulling and may not be set up properly for the current conditions. Maybe someone with experience will discuss this, I would like to know more about it as well.

I am kinda new here but have ~ 60 hours on my SE. Try lifting the machine off the ground a few feet. If the nulling goes away, there is iron in the ground. Also, when you swing, if it remains null, stop the motion and see if it stops. Possibly your discrim is set such that the target you are locating is in the blackout area of the smartfind screen. This would cause the audio to null. hope this helps.

The wider you open you IM or disc the less it nulls also you may get what i call screen freeze if you have your sensitivity too high for the area. You want to hear those nulls as you pass over disc targets it lets you know what kind of adjustments you may need to do as well as what in the ground. Most machine require movement to process so when you just stop it goes back to the hum... so yes that normal. Slowing down also reduces the nulls. I like to push my coil along the ground more than swing it. If you are used to other machines this will be new to you... its pretty amazing how slow you can move these minelabs and have them function properly. If you are getting a constant null the machine is trying to tell you something. Normally its saying why try and pick up those iron objects at 10 and 12 inches when you can reduce your sensitivity and accually find something. anytime you null your coil shuts down and you walk over targets until it recovers. If you are moving slow enough and your sensitivity is correct you should hear a constant going in and out of the null in trashy areas. Will the machine give you good target hits even in null... id say not really. If you arent moving quickly this processor isnt that slow and as it recovers you hit the next target and it sounds like you picked up targets in a null. Anyone who have opened up the explorers IM can tell by all the target sounds that it recovers faster than you think at the CORRECT sweep speed for the area.

Here's an excellent video on setting your sensitivity so it is not nulling out the threshold due to ground conditions.
