Threshold, Wet Ground and Novice Questions

Well, only one day under my belt with the Explorer, and already I have a few questions.
Had fun working the back yard. Found several coins, all clad however Also found out what a pull tab and aluminum foil sounds like.
Yesterday was rainy off and on. Ground was quite wet. All of my hits were within 6" or less. Did get a hit or two in the coin range, but wouldn't repeat.
Also noted the threshold tone would dissapear in certain areas without a target on the screen. I was using the quickstart in Smart mode. Does wet ground hinder the unit. Should I bump up the sensitivity or lower it.
Any and all comments appreciated. I love the unit, but I'm going to be calling my dealer tomorrow. When I put the unit together for the first time yesterday, did notice a hairline crack. Maybe he can order a new one. But more than likely, I'll have to send mine back. Hope I can get a newer head unit case like the posts on the FBS forum.

Hey Joe, the explorer will null on any targets that are disced or notched out.. in quickstart theres quite a bit disced out.. dont worry about that.. if you wanna hear everything but iron put it in iron mask set around -8... then when it nulls you know your over iron, your coins that would not repeat maybe because of nearby trash that is disced out as well... learn to run in iron mask and listen to the audio.. it wont take long to know a good signal when you hear it

Thanks Jim. After posting, I thought about it for awhile. I did a air test with a nail and noticed how it nulled out the threshold sound. What can you expect from a newbie
I'll try your setting and rework the yard. See how many targets I might have missed or how many iron/trash hits I get at this setting.
Still curious if extremely wet soil hinders depth, as well as how to set the sensitivity for various soil conditions. Heard the high beams in fog analogy which makes sense, but not sure on the exact relation to soil yet.
So far, I'm very pleased. Except for being a little out of shape. Digging targets caused me to use muscles I normally don't. Quite sore Good thing the weather is rainy. Gives the ole' body a little recovery time!
Thanks again!

i am a newbie also ,unit takes alot of time to understand read andys book and manual about 20 times each this winter. i would not worry to much about the crack i think people are realy blowing this out of proportion;besides i spoke to mark at minelab he told me if my xs becomes unusable because of crack to send it back to his attention and they will repair it .HE ALSO GUARRANTEED ME THAT IT WILL NEVER CRACK AGAIN; so my suggestion ,enjoy your unit and at the ebd of the season send it back to be repaired this way you wont be missing any time in the field mine is caracked alittle in same location but it does not affect the unit or the way it handles seems like a great unit have fun with it while the sun shines
