Threshold question

I have had my Explorer for three days now and I love it. I have a question regarding the threshold, It seems to go silent when I am sweeping, and returns when I stop swinging the coil. This only happens at certain sites, I've tried the threshold adjustment, but it only makes the threshold tone louder. The manual had no answers. Operation seems OK, I found a 45 Merc at an honest nine inches (I was impressed).
I am using quickstart mode, sense at about 20. I can't figure out how to correct the problem. Thanks, George

No need to correct it George, it's only nulling out over iron.

i just got mine and have the same problem. if its nulling on iron than my yard is all iron

The threshhold will disappear when the coil is over a target that you have discriminated out. Basically any target that would register in a part of your screen that is blacked out would cause the threshhold to go silent. Sometimes your threshhold will also disappear if your sensativity is too high, if you are in highly mineralized ground or very trashy areas as well.

Ninrods right anything disced out will cause a null, its normal and wont hurt anything, just remember to sweep a bit slower when its nulling to allow it time to see good targets near the disced out ones.. its why I prefer to run iron mask and listen to everything non ferrous.. when it nulls I know its iron causing it

It is very correct that it will null over disc-ed out junk, but,I bet you are swinging the coil too fast. That happens alot with new users.Try just creeping along.1 foot per second swing, even slower helps. The slower you go,the deeper you get.Not that you can't get super deep with a fast swing, just that it will null out and mask good targets before it has a chance to recover the threshold.Just a thought,if you are an ex-whites user you are probably swinging way too fast.
Just a test, with your power off,put a piece of tape on the floor and then another exactly 3 feet apart.Start with the center of your coil over one piece and swing to the center of the coil to the other piece. You should be able to count 3 full seconds.Try it,I bet you are swinging faster than you think you are.
If that is not the problem,it is junk.Lower your iron mask to -10 and try to see if you get a threshold. If you are using a tight coin pattern,it will null over everything else and more than likely cause you to miss good targets mixed with other targets.Bad habit to get into. The less discrimination you use,the more coins you will find.It will not take long to be able to tell a coin in the same hole with a nail this way.It is the way to go,it is a little annoying at first with all the extra tones you get,but with a little time you will be a force to reckon with!

are true in my case. I do sweep the coil fast, I just switched from a 6000 proxl which is a fast sweeping machine. And I am running a tight coin pattern of disc, it is the coins only program from Mikes screen page.
I'm getting out this afternoon, I'm going to slow it down and also open up the pattern. Thanks for the info. George

to all who took the time to answer, I believe that my question was answered completely. George

Geo, I think it goes silent when the coil is moving over iron which it is discriminating against & thus rejecting. My XS does just that and I have read that it will do so.Hope that helps.

I had the same problem last Thursday at an older site. Especially around the barn which I am sure is loaded with iron. The barn was built during the Civil War. I switched to iron mask and it didn't help... but I should say I had the iron mask on -6 (default setting). When I go back there I am going to bump up the iron mask and see if that gets my threshold back at all. The Explorer seemed so unstable. I also thought of trying to cycle thru the channels to see if I could get better stability. I have an Explorer S so it doesn't do the noise cancel automatically.
If that doesn't fix the problem I am thinking of getting a smaller coil... I am using the stock 10" coil now. I have another detector with a 4 inch coil I will try before that. Anyone have any suggestions?
-Bill
