Threshold question

Hope this doesn't sound too stupid. I am new to the explorer. I see it stated that the threshold should be set to "barely audible". I agree that it should be. After almost 30 years of detecting I know what "barely audible" means. My threshold is either off or on. At 6 it is silent and at 7 it is on. And it is much louder then what I would consider "barely audible". Is this the way it is or am I missing something?

The only time I ever move from 7 is when I am right up near traffic and need it to be a bit louder then I crank it up. HH Greg

On my ExII it goes off at 8 and on at 9 and then gets progressively louder with each step upward. At the default of 20 it is way too loud.

Yes, you are right, I always just turned the headphone volume down a hair to make up for it.. they fixed that on the II
