Threshold question

Hunted a very trashy field today and noticed that most of the time I had no threshold. I don't like that. I started with IM off then hunted with it on -6 for a while. I used my eight inch coil and listened alot. I dug high pitched tones only and walked away with three coins for one hour. Not too bad for this area. How does one keep a constant threshold in trashy areas? Is this not so important? I believe I may have passed up targets while in the null. What do you think? I began to slow down almost to snails pace and noticed the null period was somewhat shortened. Is this the trick? Swing really SLOW? Sorry for all the questions but this is definitely not a turn on and go detector, and I have my hands full not allowing myself to grab my X-5 or Cortes and leaving this one in the garage. That

Mike;
With the really trashy areas either you have a lot of nulling or you can open the IM up to -16 and have a lot of chatter. A smaller coil will help by having less under the coil. sometimes it will help to lower the sens but you will lose some depth. Good targets will often break through the null so it is not always necessary to have a threshold.
Hope this helps.
