Threshold - how does ferrous and conduct mode affect this?

I'm assuming that if I'm swinging the coil and don't hear a threshold (nulled) that I'm either in a pretty trashy spot, or have the sensitivity up too high. Is this a valid assumption?
Ok, if so, how does conduct and ferrous mode differ, and why is ferrous mode better for trashy spots? I'm thinking that in ferrous mode, higher tones mean less ferrous content, while in conduct mode, higher tones mean higher conductivity. I'm just not sure how ferrous mode makes it better in trash...can someone help? Thanks <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

Ferrous mode not better in trash, just better in iron, it allows you to open up iron mask and pick stuff out of iron easier.. the iron will give ow tines while non ferrous gives higher tones.. you dont want to use ferrous mode in non ferrous trash like tabs bottle caps and foil or you will get high tones off of them..
