THRESHOLD GOES QUIET

DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHY MY DETECTOR GOES TOTAL QUIET AS IF IT IS NOT ON
BUT WHEN I STOP SWINGING THE COIL THE THRESH HOLD NOISE RETURNS.I TALK TO SANDY FROM MINELAB AND SHE SAID TO CLEAN THE BATTERY TERMINAL AND POINT THE DETECTOR TOWARDS THE ELECTRICAL WIRES OR CELL PHONE TOWER AND PUSH THE NOISE CANCEL BUTTON. NONE OF THIS WORKS. ALSO WILL MY MACHINE DETECT TARGETS IN THIS STATE. THANKS

If your machine is losing it's threshold anytime the coil is in motion then there are only two probable causes.

One would be the ground is full of iron. If you have it in coin mode or some mode where iron is discriminated out, then it would result in a near constant "nulling" or loss of threshold.

The other more likely situation is that you have a combination of iron/mineral rich ground AND have the sensitivity set too high. Try running the sensitivity down to about 18 or 20 and see if that improves things. It's also important that you run the noise cancel before starting. Hold the coil about 18" off the ground, hold it still, and press the noise cancel and release it. Keep the coil still in the air until the noise cancel process completes. Now start swinging the coil slowly and see if you have smoother operation. You might also want to try running Iron Mask on and have it all the way to the left...in All Metal position...so that if there is a ton of iron, instead of loss of threshold, you'll at least hear the iron. Then you can better tell a good signal from the iron when it comes.

If you DO hunt in a mode where it's constantly nulling out due to whatever is in the ground, it will still detect good targets when you pass over them most of the time, provided that you are swinging the coil slowly enough. Constant nulling CAN cause you to miss a good target sometimes. That's why a lot of us hunt in Iron Mask mode with all the Iron Mask selected out...which is All metal...which means no nulling. Works well in areas where the ground is very bad. If you can stand all the "chatter".

The only suggestion I can make is try lowering the sensitivity while this is happening. I have experienced this a few times and it worked for me. Try cleaning under the coil also. You might even go so far as to set the machine back to factory settings and start over. This is happening while you are in some sort of discrimination mode and in conductive sounds.

Electrical interference can cause weird nulling. There is a buried line at one place I hunt and in some areas it makes the machine chirp and chatter (obvious interference) but at other places it causes the machine to null. I have raised the coil over my head in this area and the threshold returns but then goes silent at waist level. I just try to go slow and hope it picks something up. I usually run Iron mask at -11, I think (about a sixteenth of an inch of iron discriminated out).

I also had a problem with the switch on my Sun Ray probe. I guess it had a loose connection, when I would switch back to the machine it would null for minutes sometimes then slowly come back. Sun Ray fixed that problem.

Take the advise of Bob and Mike plus try the machine in different areas to make sure it is not just that spot. Hope this helps.

After using my SE for several weeks I was beginning to think my machine had a problem since I was having the same issues you are. I searched this forum and found great advice on screens and settings which helped me understand that my SE was fine and I just needed to make adjustments for different soil and trash conditions. The places I hunt have so much modern trash that the stock coil was overwhelmed by signals and the threshold nulled constantly because I ran high discrimination. I bought a Sunray 8" coil and went back to the same places I had hunted and was able to find many more coins plus the SE ran much smoother because it was easier to separate targets. My advice is to try hunting areas with minimal trash until you get more comfortable with the stock coil or get an 8" or smaller coil to learn with. Also using less discrimination will reduce nulling. You will hear many more signals that way but you will get used to hearing them and soon you will be able to pick out the good signals between trash items. Go through old posts, and search this forum. It will help you a lot as you learn your machine. Be patient,go slow, and you will be rewarded after a short learning period.
