Threshold and Rx and Disc settings ?

Pat in On

New member
I am wondering on how you settle in on your Rx Gain and Discrimination settings ?. I adjust it to the point where I get a good threshold , it almost has a sizzle to it. I realize if you are over bad ground you are going to get a lot of blanking so I am talking over a clean stretch. I know running it to high or low is going to give up some depth so how do you reach that sweat spot ?.

Pat, I cant say what I'm doing is right, but I set my discrimination to 80 then take my RX up or down just enough to either start falsing or eliminate it respectively, then I'll back the RX down one and try to get the discrimination as close to 90 or better as I can without increasing the slight falsing that is already present. When I zoom the sensitivity screen where it suggests the best RX, Ive never had it suggest an RX more than 2.I usually wind up running it considerably higher (usually not less than 6 and a lot of the time around 10).Im also interested in how other members go about setting thier sensitivity?

I use the Probe feature and whatever it suggests I back-off one or two and pop the Sensitivity up a bit. I usually get an Rx recommendation of 12 to 15 and can usually run Sensitivity at 75 to 88. (I'm in the UK.) This is the general thrust of Jimmy Sierra's recommendation - he reckons Sensitivity is more influential on depth than Rx, and he should know.

Being the slow learner I am, as well as having Larry close by to pester, I crank the RX to max whenever I am able, 15. I have a bit extra chatter, but, just don't want to miss anything in the dirt. Just me, tho

Thanks for you response Gents !!!. I like to experiment like most of you do and I have never reached a solid conclusion on how hot to run my V3. At first I allowed a certain amount of falsing but now if the soil is good and it allows me to run pretty high I have found if I drop it back a notch further I tend to get down a little deeper. But like so many other things time swinging the coil will tell.

Again thanks

HH Pat

Although I usually cranked the DFX to the max, I find that with the V3, I will go with the recommended RX setting by the probe. I will give rameses idea a try though, it makes sense to me.
