Three Hours In The Lane...Ice, Ice, Baby!

Well...er, SORT OF!

Unfortunately, what looks promising under the LED light on the beach in the dark can fail to pass muster back at the ranch under the loupe. So what looked like MAYBE a platinum diamond ring turned out to be a 925 and CZ. Oh well. The watch is cool. And I had a pretty low penny count and was digging some deep clad. I had the strong feeling I was going to get some gold too, but my battery died on me. I thought I had enough for a 4 hour hunt but only made it for 3. I was on a roll. Oh well.

There's about a buck fifty in quarters missing in the pic because after detecting I went back and got my wife and came down again to watch the sun come up and see some dolphins. Good move there...we saw at least a couple dozen and they were jumping all the way out of the water...very cool. If anybody didn't know, they can be seen daily from about 6:15 or so until maybe 7:30. Plant yourself in the wet sand at around 7th street and they will come.

Pics of the booty...

almost as cool as manatees. Nice finds.

Ever try charging the day of yer hunt? If I know I'm going to hunt that evening, then I plug it in, until I'm ready to walk out the door. She does not quit on me. Don't know if this is the right way, but she don't quit! Try it!

After I saw you my battery started going. I didnt even make it back to were we came down, Headlamp went out also, nice finds, I think that spot may open up, got 15 quarters, dimes, nickles and also just a few pennys. Ring looked great in the dark, Norm

Mike, what do you hunt with (equipment)? Man, you were born to this sport. Way to go. Maybe you should start giving lessons and charge $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Gary

Gary, I use the Minelab Excalibur to hunt the beach. And while I feel I'm pretty well tuned in to the machine, there's no substitute for "swing time".

You get out there, you put the time in, and you get the bling. Or sometimes not. I will also say that I go slow and take my time. I look up high in the wet sand, down low by the water's edge, and in the shallow water and I try to find the hot spots on the beach on that particular outing.

I find a coin hotspot and "strip mine" it, gridding it up and down and looking for the rings and things in between the coins. It works. And I typically hunt mostly in the wet sand and my standard formula is for a four hour hunt...two hours before low tide until two hours after low tide.

And I almost exclusively detect the beach at night...less people to get in the way, better temps, peaceful. I usually only detect on Friday/Saturday/Sunday, unless I take a day off from work, like I did today. That's the way I've been doing it for about 5 years now and it works very well for me most of the time.

In the fall and winter I leave the beach and hit the fields, woods, and old houses in search of Civil War stuff and old silver coins. The beach scene here is pretty dismal once the tourists leave, unless there's a good Nor'Easter. :)
