Three Brothers from NJ road trip

DennisNJ

New member
Three Brothers Ed, Bob and I (Dennis), would like a treasure hunting road trip. We are all from South Jersey. None of use have ever done this and we do not own any detectors.

We thought about renting three detectors for a week and go treasure hunting. The most important point is we are together, drinking a few beers and want to have a great time. Even possible finding some "treasure".

Do you got any suggestions, or do you think this would be a bust?

Treasure does not have to be gold, but that would be nice.

Dennis

Nothing ventured nothing gained.......
If you can rent detectors, your best bet would be beach hunting. Not in the water or on wet sand though. With no experience with metal detectors, It would be much easier to get used to signals, dig and retrieve targets (Treasure) from the soft beach sand than digging in parks. Good Luck

Howdy DennisNJ--

It sounds like you have a real adventure in your future! Regardless of what you find, the real treasure will be the time spent with your brothers. I agree with bob.oz's recommendation to beach hunt for the reasons that he mentioned. I would suggest, with winter approaching and time constraints (1 week) that you head south. Florida would be my first choice. If you can, pick up this 10 volume set:

UNITED STATES TREASURE ATLAS
by Thomas P. Terry

It lists treasure leads for every county in the U.S. and would be helpful in narrowing your prospective search sites. In Volume 3, in St. Johns County, Florida # 354: "A cache of Spanish coins is buried just S. of St. Augustine along the beach. Although many individual coins have been found, the cache has yet to be located." And #350B: "More than 75 ships were wrecked on a sandbar during the 1500's---1700's at the inlet at St. Augustine. The beaches here have yielded coins and relics to treasure hunters for years."

Well, best of luck to you and your brothers and...

Happy Hunting!

Howdy DennisNJ--

Have you tried e-bay? A friend of mine recently purchased the entire 10 volume set for $80. If you don't have any luck finding the entire set, I believe that individual volumes can often be purchased. DennisNJ, that was merely a suggestion; there are countless other books and magazines available that can give you an insight into the treasure hunting hobby that will help you to determine your goals. Try Barnes & Nobles or any other book store.

Have you checked with a local metal detector distributor / dealer? In my experience, they can be the best resource for treasure related information. Also, have you checked the cost of renting detectors? The dealer in my area charges $50 per day for one of his "low end" detectors. You and your brothers may find it more practical to purchase detectors in the $300 range. If you find that detecting is not your cup of tea you can then sell them and recoup much of the cost.

Another thought: After you decide where you are going to hunt, use the free edition of GOOGLE EARTH to view your hunting sites. It would be a real pain to travel many miles only to find that the site that you intended to hunt is now a parking lot. Always have a back-up plan! I hope this helps. Best of luck and...

All this information helps. Thanks to all.

No I have not picked a location yet, and YES, the real treasure will be the time spent with my brothers. There was four now there are three. Time is short, when you hit your sixties.

I did buy for $10, "United States Treasure Atlas, Thomas P. Terry Volume 6" I can say "Wow", not sure how to read it. It say GT (Ghost Town) in Atco, NJ. I've Been here for 40 years and never heard of a Ghost Town, but have heard of the Atco Ghost.

It appears a start for research.

What I would like, is a place to find "Treasure" not necessary riches, just a day of finds, excitement of the search, laughter, drink beer with brothers, and make a memory.

I'm getting excited just in planning this road trip. Would like to keep it local. Maybe some where in the Poconos, because I have a house there (Pocono, Lakes).

I am interested in Volume 3, (Delaware, Connecticut, and Florida looks interesting. Also Volume 8 Pennsylvania. (Monroe County, Carbon County).

Just saw on Amazon the Bounty Hunter Gold Digger detector for $40.

Do you think this would be a good start for us. Seems like an excellent Christmas Present for my brother and I

Howdy DennisNJ--

I always advise people new to the detecting hobby to practice with their detector, regardless of brand or model, in school yard sandboxes. You will find new coins and jewelery there and the recovery of targets is easy. Just last week, a friend of mine cashed in over $400 worth of clad that he dug over the past 2 years and purchased a like new Whites XLT for $300. Depending on how enthusiastic you are with the Bounty Hunter Gold Digger, you should be able to recoup the cost of your equipment in a short time. Have fun!!! Best of luck and...

I like the Garrett AT Pro, but at $800 package deal, it might be to pricy.

The Garrett 250 and 350 are also nice.

I read and viewed information stating to stay away from the cheaper machine. They are surface machines and not designed for depth, especially those items 6" or more below the surface.

Does any body know the major difference between the three Garrett machines?

DennisNJ,

Click on "Forum Index". There you will find forums dedicated to specific makes and models of detectors. If you have questions about the Garrett AT Pro, that forum is the place to ask. You will receive answers from actual users of that detector.
I would also suggest that you visit various detector manufacturers websights and YouTube both of which can be a resource to learn more about a detector of interest. If there is a local dealer nearby, you and your brothers may wish to visit the shop and get your hands on different models and the dealer will be more than happy to give you a demonstration - air tests etc. After that , stop at a tavern and have a few beers with your brothers and discuss the merits of each detector. Have fun!! Best of luck and...

Thanks for the comments.

Right now I like the Garrett AT Pro, and most likely purchase the package deal on Amazon.

Brother Bob likes the Garrett GTI 2500. Bob also found his old detector the White Coinmaster 5000 d Series 2 detector.

If it works OK we will give it to Ed.

Now we need a place to go, and do our first hunt!

If I were you...try to locate a local metal detector dealer if possible. If he has a big enough inventory...you'll be able to check out various brands of metal detectors. Definitely stay away from the cheezy looking chinese variants as they are more like toys. I would look into the Garrett ACE series or Tesoro Compadre for the best bang for the buck. Then there is the Eurotec Pro from Teknetics. You should be able to get into these machines for around the $225 mark.

You can start in your own yards,if applicable. Especially to learn on how to properly dig coins. Practice makes perfect. There are tips on recovering coins on Youtube that are pretty good. Always make a 'hinged' plug when hunting on grass. Carry a drop cloth with you to put the dirt from the dug plug into it while extracting the target/s. Then put the dirt back into the plug and flip it over. No mess...and be able to leave the area clean and no sign of digging.

Don't know what Amazon is offering but you should also check out the package deals at Kellyco also.

Garrett AT Pro package including the pointer is $750.
Garrett ACE 250 is $213
And Garrett Ace 350 is $300

All three are good machines I thought about the 250 or 350, and buying a pointer. Then here on the forum there are lots of AT Pros, which says alot about their reception.

There are no major metal detecting stores near by other than Walmart, but not package deals.

I just purchased the AT Pro package, and my brother purchased the CTI 2500 Pro.

I also worked on the White Coinmaster 5000d series 2 and got that working.

Now waiting for delivery.
