Thoughts on the 6x8" SEF?

I have the stock coil on my Etrac and do just fine with it, but I'm wondering about getting a small coil for next year. I know the 6x8 works well, but is getting a smaller coil really worth it? I did a hunt last weekend with a group of guys (I was the only Etrac, two others had ATPros, there were some 350s there, and other miscellaneous ones) and the one guy who had a small coil kicked everybody else's butt. I did better once I REALLY slowed down, but now he's got me wondering about a smaller coil for somewhat trashy areas. I always just assumed you could get the same kind of performance out of a small coil as you could out of a larger coil that was slowed down.

I had one and hated it. got the coiltek 10x5 an love it. it's like buying a Porshe and going to walmart to buy tires for it. if you have a $1500 machine why skimp on the coil ? Coiltek is the only maker that Minelab works with and they made Minelabs coils before they made their own, everyone else has to backwards engineer their coils and Coiltek gets the inside scoop on them. with smaller coils there is less under the coil at one time so in trashy spots the small coils rock as long as the targets are not too deep

hard to put into words but more bouncy numbers mostly, and for me the NEL was the worst. even the Sunrays didn't ID as good as the Coiltek. even tested several coils one day on the same targets. I would mark them then change coils and swing over it again. first swing over them with the coiltek the number would be the same every pass. the others would hit different numbers till it settled down after several passes

I liked the 6 x 8 but the cable broke failed just past the connection support going into the coil and they only have a one year warranty so it was toast.
I replaced it with the NEL sharpshooter which I am finding is better in my soil.
I can't see having the etrac without a mid or small size coil----I use them more than the stock one

it's ok especially if you have never tested it again another coil on the same targets then you start to see the differences

like I said if you have a high dollar sports car are you going to buy cheap tires for it ... same thing coil is what makes contact with the ground ... I want the best I can get

Another small coil that I would consider if you are looking at tight places and trashy sites would be the 4.5 x 7 Excelerator but I think that is a Detech as well and may only have the one year warranty---I have heard many good accounts of detecting with it.

Hey, All I can say is I love the Sef 6x8 coil and so does a zillion others. Just google the thing and check out all the positves vrs negative and that will tell you what your after. I would get another in a heart beat if something ever did happen to mine, but in two years it works like new !

I had both and know the difference and I have never seen or heard of a single failure of a coiltek coil.

I have the 6" Treasure Seeker from Coiltek and it's a good trash picker but it's a small coil versus the 6 x 8 which is really a mid size. I was very disappointed when my 6 x 8 failed shortly after the warranty and would have bought another if it had not been for the fact that I really didn't use it much so I went with NEL 5 x 10 instead. I don't know what warranty Coiltek offers. For $100 it's a no brainer--get it.

If you want the 5 x 10 coiltek for 95 bucks try googling treasureclassifieds.com/coils/fs-5-x-10-joey-coil-by-coiltek-for-minelab-etrac_i936

I have approx. 2500 hrs. on my E-Trac and I hunt with a small or medium sized coil at least 90% of the time.
One thing is for sure ... once you have used a small coil in heavy iron you will never even consider using the stock coil coil again !

A small coil 7" or less.
The 6 x 8 SEF is actually a mid sized coil.
I don't own one - but from everything I've read over the past few years the 6x8 SEF is a fantastic coil in heavy iron, it's still large enough to give good ground coverage and it hits deep.

it's either a large medium or small large coil. I ended up selling mine and replaced it with the Ultimate 13". 98% of the time I have either it or the 10x5 on. for when I need either max depth or coverage I have the Coiltek 15" wot coil ...

I have had my 6x8 for 2 yrs and used it almost exclusively the whole 2014 season and it impressed the heck out of me on separation, depth....it is a super coil. You can run sensitivity higher, it is super stable, right on the money on the ID. Awesome for old yards filled with trash and or iron. Super to use in farm fields as well. I actually prefer it over my stock coil now I have used it so much this season. If it ever broke I would absolutely but another one!!! I have dug several dimes and similar sized objects at 9" range no problem, I would HIGHLY recommend it as a TO BUY coil....a MUST have!

hmm....Terry as much as I trust your judgement I put the Coiltek on hold yesterday...can't pass up a $100 deal on a coil like that! Incidentally, I decided it was a good time of year to count up my 2014 season clad last night and have $95 and change so the coil will basically be free...lol
