Thoughts on 5,75 and which detector

Confusing topic, eh?

I have a Deleon with 4 coils but the smallest is the 7" DD. So I want to get the 5.75. I also want a simple detector for my wife to use when we go together. My original thought was to buy the 5.75 and a lower rod then buy a Silver for her and if need be, it could be my backup. But I noticed the Compadre comes with a 5.75 instead of the 7". If I got the Compadre (I know that you can't change coils on it), would it be as effective on trashy spots as the Deleon with a 5.75. To me, it would be easier to just grab it rather than change coils on the Deleon. I just want something for trashy areas and wondered how the Compadre performed in lieu of the Silver uMax or Deleon.

Dan, the Compadre is an ideal unit for a backup or even first line choice
for detecting trashy ground. The 5.75 coil works beautifully for "cherry
picking" good targets amongst the trash. The Compadre is very simple
to use as the tuning is fast enough to easily pinpoint targets with very
slow motion of the coil. Easy to get proficient with it quickly. It is the
most effective detector made for the very low price, in my opinion and
I'm certainly not alone in that belief.

Hay Dan,

The Compadre will cost you more than $200 less than a Silver and a 5.75 coil with lower rod.

Just $30 odd more and you could have a Silver and a Compadre.

I have a Euro Sabre, Vaquero and a Silver Sabre uMax.

The Compadre is what I go to most.

In my opinion:

Nothing has a better analog discriminator.

Nothing works better in trash.

Compadre is the absolute KING OF THE TOT LOTs.

I say this without reservation.

I know that everyone does not agree.

But I could care less.

HH,

Yeah. My concern was if the electronics of the Compadre was as proficient as the Silver. When I was at Richards house the other day (Backwoods), he said the little unit does great. To discriminate, use it in the "all metal" setting and when you find something, just thumb the knob until it loses signal to ID. I know of Tesoros fast response to targets, eliminating the use of PP button (my Deleon is great for pinpointing in Disc mode as is all Tesoros).

One area I have is a lake (which I live on) that recedes each year (its controlled by TVA) and when I detect the lake bottom, there is lots of trash (some boaters are real slobs). I almost opted for the 4" coil. But James Gifford at Tesoro informed me that he still thought the 5.75 would be better all around for even the trashiest areas.

I'm not a big "depth" person. If it's more than 8" down, I'll leave it for the deep diggers. Tesoros are the best I've used for signal response. I use the TID more for identifying trash than treasure. Many people use TID to identify nickels and silver coins to dig. I use it more to ID iron and foil for what NOT to dig. It saves me 20% of digging time, so I still dif the iffy signals. Just wondered if the Compadre was going to meet 6" depth and give me the same response I have in the Deleon.

I'll take knobs for quick adjustments any day over fumbling pushing buttons.

Hightone more confusion.
I have a DeLeon and I put a 5.75 coil on it the end of last summer and it has not been off yet. I use it all the time. I am thinking about getting the 4" coil because I have been doing tot lots and even with the 5.75 coil I am just not getting close enough to the poles.
With the 5.75 I have found coins that others have missed because they could not get as close to the poles as I could. I am not talking about a few coins, some times I pick up ten or more coins because I can get a little closer. The amazing thing is that these coins mostly are only 1 to 3" down. I think I could pick up more coins if I could get even closer to the poles. Thanks for reading... Jer

I would be using a 5.75 in areas I need it for, like trashy or tot lots. But much of my detecting is in open areas. Some of our old homes in the Tennessee mountains have big back yards and fields. I probably wouldn't use the 5.75 as it would take a long time to scan these areas.

The compadre is excellent. Just been and tried out my new one and I am very pleased with it. I know what I would do !

Nice to have a full complement of coils for a favorite, or only detector, but a backup detector would be a good thing in the odd event of failure of #1... I would go with the Tabdog's advice and get a Compadre with 5.75 coil.

And a nice RTG sand scoop. Got a great deal on the Compadre. Used once, in box for $140. Warranty card hasn't been filled out.

Deleon and Compadre. I'm a two detector guy. WooHoo.:clapping::laugh:

Way to go.

If you already have a DeLeon there won't be much to learn.

But it may take a little to get use to not having a all metal.

That forced me to learn that it can actually do what is necessary

with just the one mode. Not only that but much more.

I think it's just a great machine.

Yes, Richard is great. He also knows I have been dealing with another local guy for a long time too (Richard is local to me). I try to give business to both. I went to Richards house last week and bought a set of SunRay Pro headphones. My first meeting with him and yes, he is a true honest person that is also a passionate MDer.

Good buy , the compadry can handle very trashey spots and pinpont to a pinhead and its as deep as most any detector whith the same size coil im now able to get in the trash spots whith ease that used to drive out my umax whith its joke of an 8" coil the compadre is a top of the line detector

i second that!..richard's a regular guy who's honest and a pleasure to do business with!
