In the St. Louis Post Dispatch Paper today, (November 15, 2004), in the Everyday section, was an interesting article. A metal detectorist was on a beach somewhere in Florida where one of the hurricanes tore a beach up bad. The article stated he found so many "pieces of eight" and silver, it was valued at over $40,000.00. Many pieces were even laying on top of the sand. The article said he would not give the location, but his full NAME was given. I was under the impression that treasure found, depending on the U.S. State, was subject to confiscation and duties? Why would that detectorist make his finds public in the papers?
