Thought I was Skunked on Silver but...

I was out at a school built in 1934 where I had found mercs and wheaties before. I was digging a bunch of clad and few wheats when I got a 12.40 at 8 in. I recovered a crusty black coin which was nickle sized but did not hit anywhere near the nickle zone. When I got home I tried to scrape some of the black stuff off with my finger nail. Finally I could see part of Monticello and knew I had a Jeff nickle. I then scratched just above the dome until I could see an S mint mark. Ah, a war nickle. Still cant see the date so I would appreciate any advice to clean it up a little more. I also got 3 wheats ( 56, 49, and 40).

what does it hit 12-20? i have a few like this. D

No, it hit (and still does hit) 12.40. Which is why I was so surprised...

Nice war nickel. I have had them hit high too, but only in soil. Can't replicate on air test.

Got one yesterday and it was the same black oily crud like mess. I used soap and water, then a stiff bristle brush and a pick to get most off, then electrolysis for about 2 minutes. About 90% came off.
