Thought I Had A Penny Trifecta - NOT - Darn Half Cents

I just love field hunting old log cabin and house sites. You never know what might come out of the ground. A few weeks ago I got a 6x8 SEF coil and have been trying it out for the last couple weeks. This coil is fantastic in iron infested ground. Today I went back to a log cabin site that I have hunted at least a dozen times and only found a 1940's nickel and a cracker jack coin. Always before I had used the stock coil that came with the detector but today I was using the little 6x8 coil. It wasn't long before I got a decent signal and decided to dig the target. Out pops an indian cent, my third one this month. Pretty soon I get another good signal and dig up a 1920 lincoln cent. Its not much longer and I get a good deep high tone that sounds like silver. Thinking to myself that I just can't get that lucky today I dig it up. Out pops this large copper disk. Its worn almost smooth but as I wipe the dirt away I can see that there is writing on it. Now I'm excited, its my first large cent. I'm only a mile from home so I head back to clean my finds and see just what I've got. Something about the large cent just doesn't look right as I am cleaning it, there is a seated lady on the front of it. It doesn't take long to realize that it is a Canadian half cent token from 1812. Not the large cent that I wanted so badly but I'm happy with it. Its not everyday that I find a 200 year old coin. Now I will give it a peroxide bath and see if it will help bring out some detail. Well there is about an hours worth of daylight left so I think I will go back and hunt that site some more.

Congratulations, can't wait to see it Daryl.

OMG Daryl, I've never seen a half cent. What a fantastic find and I can't wait to see it. Can you imagine what it went through in the past 200 years?! Oh, if it could talk. Congratulations and HH, Nancy

I don't think I've ever seen a half cent. Can't wait till you bring it in. HH, Nancy

I've never seen a half cent. The only thing I have even close was a Lincoln that was cut in half.

I just about snagged that 6x8 that was was up for sale last week (but it had sold before I saw the post). I cant wait to try out a smaller coil at a few of my sites..
Glad you had some luck at your spot!! Take care
Neil

We have found tokens from the 1830's and 1850's, yours is the oldest. Is it from the Upper Bank of Canada? Good find.

Pictures of a better one that sold for $63 on EBay
