This weeks V3i upgrade observations and finds.

I did get out earlier in the week to a local park with the V3i. I had detected the park about 18 months ago with the DFX. At the time I was unable to get close to the electrical cables running along the edge of the field. The V3i handled it with no problems at all with the exception of when I was directly underneath. I was in 7Khz at the time and I simply changed the Transmit Frequency Offset a few notches and it was fine. This is a much more stable detector than it was before I sent it in for the upgrade. I have also switched back to the D2 as my default coil. I did not like this coil at all before I sent it in for the upgrade and was using the 950. Now the 950 is back on the shelf!

There were not a lot of good targets left in the field as it has been heavily hit, but the V3i was so sensitive that it was picking up small bits of foil at more than 10 inches. I know the DFX was not picking up these last year. I moved across the street to another park with a lake and woods and it had all the signs that it was detected; twist tabs hat were placed back in the bottom of the hole before replacing the plug, instead of being removed, etc.

Disappointed, I was heading out as it was beginning to get dark, and as I got about 20 or 30 yards from my car I got a penny/dime reading, jumping around a bit from 76-78 or so at 4.5 inches. Thinking this was another one for the coin jar, I dug and was surprised to see this beautiful King George III Irish Halfpenny, which had so much detail showign through the caked on dirt that I thought for a second that it was a modern QE III One Pence Coin!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE UPGRADE!! This is a much more stable detector than the V3.

Have a great weekend and happy hunting.

Very nice coin. Glad the upgrade is working well for you and you have no other apparent problems.
The freq. offset you used also seemed to have worked.

Another great find Neil........

What a wonderful candidate for heat shocking with olive oil and water. The detail on the back would emerge and the front would sharpen. I like the old ones and great pictures..:clapping:

Personally I do not like the results of olive oil... I am not familiar with heat shocking. I soaked this coin in hot hydrogen peroxide to get off all the loose dirt, then carefully wiped any remaining residue with a wet Q tip. Then it was soaked for about a day in distilled water and lastly, given a thin coat of Vaseline which was wiped off with a Q tip as well, then it sat overnight to absorb any of the petroleum jelly into the pores. The obverse looks much better in person, the reverse looks as good in the picture as it does in person.

This is what the coin looked like when it was dug:

Great find Neil. Glad the V3i works for you. I had the same problem as you with the V3............I couldn't use the D2. It is my go to coil now with the V3i. It will see the deep ones............you will see if you haven't already.
