This weekends hunt :cam:

I went up to my grandparents house this weekend. As you might remember, they live right down the road from an old plantation called martintown. I stuck mainly to their yard this time because they have found revolutionary buttons when planting their garden befor. I found what I usually find in their yard, almost nothing but square nails. I did find a coffin nail and a button though. On the back of the button it says warranted, a word I cannot make out, and orange (might be only part of the word). Its about the size of a penny and has no design on the front. any ideas?

I did manage to get permission to search the yard of the main house of the plantation.

I was only there for about fifteen minutes. I didn't find any old coins, which surprised me because I'm the first the hunt it. But I did find a few interesting things.

I have no idea on the large object, and the buckle is a suspender buckle. The object down and left of the penny sized button is folded over and has what might be a shaft if its a button. It reads COLGATE & COMPANY NEW YORK. I did find this which may help identify an age. http://www.colgate.com/app/Colgate/US/Corp/History/1806.cvsp ,Look under 1857.

I didn't get a chance to detect around the only standing cabin left this time. but I have permission for whenever I want to go.

Well, thats all I have to say, happy hunting everyone.

well, I don't have it to take pictures, but the long part is square like regular square nails and the top part is real wide, round and obviously hammered out to almost the diameter of a quarter. I'm not a hundred percent sure if it is from an old coffin, but thats what my grandparents said and we have found the metal corners from coffins right around there.

hi norton4, i think you might be in luck... i found a similar flat button not long ago with an "extra gilt, orange, london" backmark. orange must be the maker's name. so the missing word might be london. the dark object bottom left corner - is that an old metal colgate tube? i like the old buckle too. but any way, great hunt! hh,

It does appear to be from the same company. The company was known as colgate and company in the 1850's, so I think its kinda cool.

Nice place to hunt. The button is a post colonial flat button. It starts around 1820's and goes to about 1850's, give or take. When I do standing houses, I always have a hard time getting the deep stuff. Remember that the grass cuts down a lot of depth for your machine. All of the targets you want are there, they are just deeper then you are getting down. Try and find an old tree or a place where the ground is more bare. If they had landscaping done, the goods are probably deeply buried. If they ever do any work on the lawn or dig for anything, detect there!!! That house has had many years of sinking the coins deep and many years of trash build up for the masking effect. You may want to try all metal for a short time to see if it doesn't drive you nuts. Keep us posted!! What state are you in?

thanks coinnut, I am in Virginia, near Richmond but this plantation is 3 hours away. so I only go when visiting my grandparents. Right in the front yard of the house there is a power line thats been making my detector go crazy if I get too close. There is a backhoe and 2 piles of dirt in the back yard so I'll check that area in July when I go back. I don't think my bounty hunter gets the depth needed for the real nice stuff here though. everything I found was real close to the top.

hi norton4, i found a buckle just like the small one you have in your pic. it's an exact match if it's about an inch long! looks like a lot of your stuff is around the 1860's or earlier. it's good ground and you should hit it hard and slow. there's some old coinage there too. and don't forget about your old buddy gray ghost who lives near richmond too! hh,
