This really happened.. This morning...

A friend of mine wanted to show me his new detector... How it worked etc... He used a large digging tool with about a 12" concaved business end.

5 times he dug a target.. 5 times he said it was 7"- 8"- 7"- 9" and 6"...................... deep target as I watched. He did dig some shallow one's too in all fairness.

Five times I watched the coin fall from the side of the plug at about 3" to the depths he claimed to have dug it. He then dug deeper and used pinpoint to locate coin in hole or dirt he pulled out. Honest..this happened.
He really thought he was getting the depths he claimed.

We all have to make sure the target doesn't fall down in the hole... I guess that is how we all get fooled... as you lift the first dirt dig ..you do not see the target drop to the bottom always..He was sor'ta right. They were at the depths he said when he pinpointed and brought them out of the hole..But originally they were nearer the surface for certain..

I hear what you say Elton. For myself, I only claim certain depth when the target is still in the plug, or the imprint of the target is still in the plug, that way you can see how deep in the plug it is.

Don't tell him, though, El, it will take all the fun out of it for him. Of course, using a digger with a 12" wide digging end ,he shouldn't be having any fun. HH jim tn

You know as I get older, sometimes the coin gets flung out to the side leaving nothing to pinpoint. I know than I got the coin out and running . Just a matter of locating it topside. As far as your buddie, he can claim all the depth he believes. But the dredge he's using to dig holes ? Hope he doesn't frequent the parks that could use the damage against us.

Digger is home made. About 12" long maybe 11"..only 3 " wide. Guess I stated the size description wrong in my post.

Jim your right. There is no way I would tell him. He's near 80. Loves to detect and truly enjoys the hobby. Seemed like his pin pointing was off a little. This caused him to sometimes slice down beside where the coin actually was located..He might do way better in solid dirt. This dirt was loose and crumbly..

My thoughts on this wasn't to fault him at all. My thoughts were I wondered how many coins fell down when I detected them... and I too thought deeper finds .. I have much to much respect for (F) to correct him.
I certainly meant nothing negative about him in my post.

This was about error in depth.

The thing that irritates me -I use a screwdriver in my area to pop the coins and I invariably touch the coin on the outside edge and turn it to a vertical position which causes some of my surface finds to be 3" finds!!:lmfao:
