This question is for those who have a hearing problem.

A life of construction work has taken it's toll. The doctor has told me I have lost half of my hearing. I am wondering is there a headphone that can help me find targets better. With hearing loss, I can't hear the higher tones. I have yet to get hearing aids. If I was to get them, do they work with headphones? So, is there headphones that work with hearing aids or is there headphone that will help me without the hearing aids? I am looking to buy a good pair of headphones. Ones that I hope can help me hear the targets better or is it just a lost cause?

Besides headphones, you should look into a detector that changes audio frequency rather than your typical T/R that changes volume, when it detects. Tesoro Lobo, the Mine Labs units and others. When you start loosing your hearing, you can still hear minute changes in frequency but more limited changes in volume which will cause you to loose detecting depth and/or smaller targets. You should go test various detectors and see which works best for you.........then look into headphones.

Hey, just an opinion. :beers:

Hey John ask this same question on the Minelab explorer forum. RickND wear's hearing aids and he would be able to help you.
Good luck Gary

Also...look up the Ratphone website. They seem to have the best explanation I've seen about what makes a headphone a good one. Then give them a call and ask your question to one of their techs. At least that's another way I'd go at it. Jim

John, Black Widows do pump up the volume. If your looking for more volume.... Z

i dont know anything about this, but maybe those little sound boosters might help, some of them have been called miracle ear, i may have seen one at harbor freight the other day,i ve been wondering about some of this also, i can hear pretty good but have a real bad ringing that seems to get worse by the day, im in construction also, not sure if its that or being subjected to the explosions in the military. good luck

Yes, I do wear hearing aids and they are the behind the ear ones in order to have the power I need as I am total deaf in the high tones and bad in all the other ones. I haven't seen a headphones that will work with my aids as there is way too much feedback, but I hear some with a slight loss with the all in the ear aids will work with headphones.

Now for me I need the volume also and on my Sovereigns the Timberwolfs Lobos or Predator's work the best for me and can hear those weak signals. Now on my Explorer and E-Trac they don't have the volume I need and find the Troy Pros are by far the best headphones for those that have a Explorer or E-Trac and hard of hearing. Both the Sovereign and the E-Trac I listen to the tones changes which helps a lot. I also have a set of the Uni probe I use on my detectors I can not get a Sun Ray Probe for and find these too have some good volume for me. There is some that are real bad too if you have bad hearing as they don't have much volume at all.

I have a 40% loss in my left ear. I do not wear the hearing aid while hunting. I will say find a good pait of headphones with dual volume, and a detector that also has a volume. I keep my X-Terra pretty high, and the headphones (Sun Ray Pro Golds) turned up also, Beale.

My hearing is 50% in one ear and 30% in the other. It seems that I don't have volume trouble. I really have trouble in hearing the different frequencies. I mainly hunt in two tone on my F-70, because it is a more simplistic setting. I try to listen to the changes in the tones.

If you have trouble with the higher tones, but are ok with mid to low range you may have a couple options. You could use a single tone detector which has a tone in the mid to low range. If there is a detector you really like, but its audio tone is too high for you, enquire from the manufacturer as to whether they can adjust the tone on your detector to suit you. Additionally, if you really really want to use a detector which is multi toned, enquire from the manufacturer whether they can adjust the tones on your machine so that they fall within the mid to low range, ie. take out the high tones which cause the difficulty, whilst still having the detector respond to all targets , but in tones in the mid to low range. All the best.

To hawgdawg the ringing in your ear is most probably tinnitus which is caused by many things I would check into this because it will keep getting worse. I also have this problem and I am going to the ear doctor next week . I have no hearing in my left ear and only 50 percent in my right ear as of my last hearing test . I am hopeful that they can help me with this because I think I am missing deep targets with my detector . I have a mine lab xs I will say that I have found ten silver , and about thirty wheat pennies , and only one Indian head penny as of this date i think that i should be getting more good coin finds . But we will see what happens next week .

I've worked construction my whole life also, I have about 40% loss in each ear. I wear the behind the ear aids and can wear my Garett headphones with them but sometimes I do get some feedback. I have to adjust the cups untill I eliminate the feed back or I just take them out and crank up the volume.
