Curiosity got the best of me tonight, so I decided to pull all the coppers that I dug on Saturday out of the olive oil to see if I could get some ID's. To my amazement, I was able to get dates off of 3 out of the 4 coppers. The 3 that are identified are all William III half pennys and they are dated 1695, 1698 and 1699. The 4th copper is worn and corroded so badly, I doubt I will get a date off of it. I am keeping my fingers crossed though. I plan on going back to the spill site to see if I can muster up just 1 more copper or even better, a pine tree shilling. My feeling is that this spill was lost in the very early 1700's and pine tree shillings were still circulating during that time in Massachusetts. I plan on digging all the iron signals first to get them out of the way. Then I'm going to scrape 6 inches and try to get the coil down deeper. My feeling is that any silver coin, even a dime sized target would be undetectable at this spot. Especially since all the coppers were 9 - 10" deep and barely rang up on the machine. Running max sensitivity did help make the target ID a little more consistent, but I'm afraid with those blasted square nails, they may be masking a small silver at that depth. We had a bit of snow yesterday, but hopefully I can get one more hunt in before winter really sets in. Thanks for reading and HH!

I like your thinking, Eric. Masterful job on getting the 4 coppers and I wouldn't be surprised to see you post another copper or two and maybe even a reale from that spot. Good luck...and Happy New Year. HH jim tn
