square end will make it difficult to dig with...........you need a rounded or pointed tip to get a good grab of sand. You will be pushing your gold targets away like a bulldozer.
 
My detecting friends in the UK use this scoop when water detecting European beaches. They had one made for me which I've found to be the best one I've ever tried. A bit heavy but does an excellent job even in areas where you encounter small rocks.
