Full Metal Racket
The perverse thrill of metal detecting, the world's worst hobby.

Listen to Emily Yoffe discuss this topic on NPR's Day to Day.

I brought my metal detector on our summer vacation

I'm pretty sure that prairie dogs can't get monkey pox.

I'll bet that if her attitude were positive she wouldn't have enough words for her column space.

I love folks that go out on 2-3 trips with a detector expecting to strike it rich before they even know the machine and then putting down the hobby because they feel they have been robbed of their money...It all depends on how long and how well you know your machine, where your hunting, and your "attitude". Come into this hobby with the attitude that your not gonna find a thing, and your most likely not gonna be disapointed...your not gonna find a thing...I never expect anything...I just enjoy the outdoors, and take my finds as they come...I have yet after nearly 4 years to find a gold ring, diamond ring, or anything of major value....Am I gonna rant and rave and put the hobby down? NO...Why...because I keep that spirit alive that says..."Maybe the next hole will be the big one!!!"...And it just might be...If you bought your metal detector to strike it rich, you better just put it in your next garage sale, because unless your hunting gold nuggets, and finding them every day, your NOT gonna get rich...This is NOT a profession...It is a hobby.

HH,

I hope the people that would actually read that story, in its natural setting, take her advice. Don't get a metal detector. Because all they are going to do is talk bad about it no matter what brand it is. This kind of thing bothers me to no end. I really LIKE and USE my Bounty hunter detector and see no reason to get anything else. I wish more people would promote it as a positive thing, but then again, maybe not. More for us who take this hobby a little more seriously, and understand the limitations of metal detectors in general.

Yeah but just think, all those folks that think negative are leaving all the good stuff for those that enjoy getting out in the fresh air and finding an old silver dime or quarter or gold ring w/ a diamond. I had a friend in Oakland Ca that folks at work looked kinda down on. rather go metal detect, than sell insurance........George found a fortune in some old coffee cans buried down in the crawl space of an old house (also lot's of bugs, spiders, dirt) gold coins in one, silver dollars in other cans he brought about 15 old gold coins for show & tell at the Club Meeting....needless to say a few members were jealous A great find & the last laugh !
